Star Wars Skirmish rules???
« on: January 11, 2015, 03:05:34 AM »
I was curious if anyone can recommend any rules for Star Wars... and not the WOTC stuff.  I know there was the Star Wars Miniatures Battle from the early 90`s....was this any good.  I was interested in something that perhaps covered or would work well for weapon stats from all the movies.

Thanks!

I'm biased, but you might want to check out Rogue Planet. It definitely caters to the cinematic style of the movies and handles the Jedi powers really well [force throws and lifts, deflecting lasers with light sabers, etc.].

I actually don't think you would do too badly with a 40K skirmish game.  It has psychic powers, lots of close combat, saves that could count as someone deflecting something, etc.  I guess it depends on what level of skirmish you want, 20 some models a side or 5.

If you want 5 try infinity, lower the weapons ranges.  You'll have to make up your own stats but it shouldn't be hard.

Here's a vote for Pulp Alley. Simple, fast, and fun. :D

Some info on WEG's Star Wars Miniature Battles:
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/7420/star-wars-miniatures-battles

Fubar has Star Wars expansions:

If you have W40K 3-4th edition you have the VDR and Creature Feature which should make stating up quite straight forward.

Blasters and Bulkheads:

And possibly Chaos on Cronos:

Imperial Assault has skirmish rules:

Mutants and Death Ray Guns is a possibility, if you like the "Song of..." rule engine.

I recently picked up AE: Bounty, and like the look of the rules.  They seem versatile enough to handle Star Wars, if you don't mind a few rules "counts-as" substitutions (Jedi get melee stuff, and maybe a force-field represents their ability to deflect blaster shots, for example).

Back when I played Necromunda, we had a few Jedi warbands made using the Spyrer rules (specifically Jakara spyrers, who get the mono-blades and mirror shields).  You could probably use other gangs to represent other Star Wars forces (Arbites as Stormtroopers, Orlocks as Rebels, so on and so forth).

I'd second Blasters and Bulkheads.  A nice twist on the Goalsystem engine and one that was originally conceived as a not-star-wars game.  The original rulebook even had a not-jedi on the cover.  The Heroes and Mooks way of organizing units really fits the Star Wars vibe of having powerful protagonists and lots of henchmen.

AFAIK, the new rules open it up a bit to other types of pulp-sci-fi gaming, but it'd still be my first stop for star-wars gaming.
