BIF in the Early ACW?
« on: January 11, 2015, 10:33:16 AM »
I wonder.......

The ACW is not really my 'bag' but this new BIF Perry releases have got me wondering, how the 'professionalism' most of the BIF would compare to the quickly formed units of the Yanks in the early ACW?

Sounds like an obvious question but......???

Darrell.

I tinkered with it a good few years ago but was planning a french intervention army from mexico. Fire and fury rules was the game I was planning to use. From memory I think it was likely a rather one sided afair but numbers would tell

The interesting question is how long official doctrine would have lasted in the face of harsh reality. I would not have expected the mounted cavalry charge to have remained a useful tactic beyond the first few weeks.

The line-based British infantry tactics might have been effective; but the French attack in column sounds like a recipe for disaster.

It isn't really the same thing, but it is the same time frame.  The British intervened in the Tai Ping Rebellion at the time the ACW was going on.  If you have a look at how some of the forces there fought it might be instructive.

Now the Tai Ping, with matchlock muskets, are going to be a different game to Union infantry with rifled muskets so the comparison will be a little wonky but there probably is some information to be gained.
