Raid on Scotsman's Creek - FIW
« on: January 27, 2015, 09:53:53 AM »
Hello All,

I just wanted to share some pictures of the FIW game my friends and I had on the Australia Day long weekend.

The Scotsman's Creek Raid was aimed at destroying a British blockhouse and the two settler farm houses close to it.

The French fielded a large raiding party of 60 Indians and a platoon of Marines.

The British soldiers and settlers were heavily out numbered and the outcome was never in doubt. The blockhouse and farms would burn!

Sorry for the quality of the pictures as I took them with my iPhone.

Still working out some of the kinks with the terrain. The teddy bear fur mat still has to be cut shorter and toned with other colours. Currently the fur tuffs is also making the terrain hover above the surface of the mat - I really hate that!

Anyway, here are the pictures in no particular order.

While the photos may be a little small/blurry, they hint at a wonderful looking large table with beautiful terrain (love that river) and miniatures.

What ruleset were you using?

Lovely wooded terrain and great looking river. :o
I'm just getting into this period and trying to get all the ideas that I can for games.

Love the ford...!

Looks like a fun game, Oberst. Not sure what to tell you as a suggestion for the fur. Is it possible to press the area where the terrain will sit down really hard with a flat piece? Or is the fur resilient and springs back? Weighting the bottom of your terrain pieces might perhaps help, but that would be a major undertaking!

Hi,
Brilliant looking game and terrain. Did the British manage to hold out or escape? Or were the French and their Indian allies triumphant?

Love the terrain.
Is the fort and blockhouse hand made?
Very nice.

Hello All and thank you for positive remarks.

The rules we used were a combination of 'A Formidable Enemy' and 'This Very Ground.' Both sets of rules have their pitfalls and we used the best of both to play our game. Both sets of rules are for 1:1 skirmishing.

The teddy bear fur mat is a worry. I had cut it down with scissors over the Christmas break, but even after hours of cutting there was still way to much length to the strands. Once paint was applied to colour it green the strands became springs. I shall again attack the matt with scissors and hopefully an electric pair of animal fur clippers in the attempt to reduce the strands to 2-3 mm.

I have considered backing of the terrain pieces with heavier material, but this will only add to the weight of transporting the terrain around. I'll see how the cutting down of the strands go first,  before I go down the path of making the terrain heavier.

The stockade is resin and available from Frontline. The Galloping Major also sells it on behalf of Frontline. Its about 45 pounds plus P&P.

There is another blockhouse from Ironclad Miniatures which you may like.

Many people complain about a table like yours looking to full to play games...I say it looks realistic for the time period. Well done!!

I'd love to play on a table that looked like that.
