There was a game or two like that at Historicon. Ships weren't as nice though, and it was played on the standard tables just crammed with ships.

I was a big fan of Space 1889 as a role-playing game (and the board game spin-off "Temple of the Beastmen"). I've looked at those pages linked to here many times and idly thought "I'm going to do that."

But I never will.
