Soviet Recce, Logistics & Support in 20mm
« on: January 29, 2015, 12:49:12 AM »
Battlegroup Kursk encourages the use of flexible recce, logistics and support options.

A handful of Ba-64's... Fun little devils to paint and probably the niftiest looking Soviet AC.

I doubt I'll ever need three of these at any one time, but there you go...

These are resin kits from Blitzkrieg Miniatures

A Trio of Carriers... Inspired by photos of Soviet recce units with lend-lease carriers.
Two RAFM white metal kits and one from the Plastic Soldier Company.

These add terrific cross-country mobility to those units that can use them.

I suspect I'll end up needing more.

A Quartet of Softskins... From Moonlite Modelwerks.
The Ambulance and Quad Maxim mount will fill some long-standing gaps in my Red Army forces.

Troop transports, supply vehicles, ambulances, engineering vehicles, radio and command vehicles all contribute to the game.

You can never have enough trucks and the Moonlite GAZ-AAA is a beauty.

Two Support Guns...  An SU-122 and yet another SU-76. I own too many '76's.
I've been impressed with the SU-122's ability to pin armour and knock stuff about. Not so good at knocking out armour, but suppression is a critical part of BG play.

Decided to pick up this diecast piece simply because the detail is better than on the two resin pieces I'm using now.

This old resin SU-76 looked like it would make a good wreck marker or obstacle...

But as I started to paint it up I took a liking to it. It's got old-school charm.

If I need a wreck, I'll put a smoke & flame thingy on top of it. Nothing wrong with a 'fresh' wreck.

Thanks for dropping by!

Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

Thank you gents, very kind of you.  :D

What's your recipe for the green?
I have a few different green mixes to help keep my Soviets from looking all the same, I'm happy to share my recipes. Hope they provide some inspiration.

The armoured cars and assault guns were painted with 'Soviet Green II', the softskins with 'Soviet Green I' and the carriers with a mix that suggests SCC15 Olive Drab. The beauty of working with Tamiya paints is that you can mix, and even thin, their paints and they keep forever. Invest in the wee Tamiya mixing jars to preserve your colour combos.

Over a black-green primer (a mix of Russian green and black vallejo surface primers) I spray the mid tone almost to the edge of each panel or area, allowing the dark primer colour to serve as pre-shading. The highlight is sprayed into those same areas, but only just enough to create a gradient that looks nice. This might sound like a lot of work, but it's easy and it really suits production line painting of many pieces.

Pin wash, edge-highlighting and a filter tie it all together. We aren't talking about gloss coat, decals, satin/matte and weathering; just colours.

Soviet Green I
Primer & Pre-Shade: Vallejo Surface Primers 'Russian Green' + 'Black'. Spray straight up at 30psi.

Mid Tone: Tamiya XF-13 JA Green + XF-60 Dark Yellow, shade with drops of XF-85 Rubber Black
Highlight: Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey + XF-60 Dark Yellow, shade with drops of XF-85 Rubber Black and toned with  XF-19 Sky Grey

Pin-Wash: AK Interactive 045 Dark Brown
Edge-Highlight: drybrush with Grumbacher Unbleached Titanium (oil paint)
Filter: Pale green mixed up from; Burnt Umber, Flake White, Burn Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Prussian Blue. Careful w/ the yellow & the blue.

Soviet Green II
Primer & Pre-Shade: Vallejo Surface Primers 'Russian Green' + 'Black'. Spray straight up at 30psi.

Mid Tone: Tamiya XF-58 Olive Green + XF-4 Yellow Green, shade with drops of XF-76 Gray Green and XF-11 JN Green.
Highlight: Tamiya XF-58 Olive Green + XF-3 Yellow (quite a lot actually), shade w/ drops of XF-76 Gray Green and tint with  XF-2 White.

Pin-Wash: AK Interactive 045 Dark Brown
Edge-Highlight: drybrush with Grumbacher Unbleached Titanium (oil paint)
Filter: A pale green mixed up from; Burnt Umber, Flake White, Burn Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Prussian Blue.

:o

No wonder you get such wonderful greens, many thanks for the lists. Unfortunately I am yet to try out my meager airbrush…  :-I
