28mm East Germans?
« on: January 29, 2015, 10:24:19 PM »
One of my gaming buddies recently picked up the Force on Force rules to entertain his "Cold War Gone Hot" fetish, and desperately wants an East German force.

After some searching, it looks like the only ones available in 28mm are from Mongrel - and by "available", I mean "impossible to obtain".  :(

So, I'm appealing to to the good crowd here at LAF in the hopes one of you might know of some other manufacturer we've missed, or maybe point me toward some secret cache in someone's shop.

My friend is ready to give up and follow the path of least resistance (i.e. 1/72 scale), whereas I've put my foot down and said that beginning a new range of figures in a completely new scale (for me) directly contradicts my "already have too much stuff" doctrine. So you might say we're about to have our own personal "Cold War Gone Hot" if we don't have help!  lol

Unless someone knows better (which is indeed a probability) Mongrel were the only game in town as far as East Germans go. When the new owner can rouse himself to supply them, Newline Design do keep their availability pretty bang up to date

Otherwise e-bay is your best bet... or indeed a change of scale.  :(

I'm dittoing Arlequin here. The only other option, to give a rough impression of East Germans, might be some WWW2 Germans in the experimental late war helmet with STG44's. The detail will incorrect but at a glance in the right camo scheme they might pass muster.

I think CP models did a pack or two in 28mm as part of their 1946 range, although most of the stuff was done in 20mm. They still carry the 20mm figures, but not sure what has happened to the 28mm chaps. http://www.cpmodelsminiatures.co.uk/

This is from the Underfire Miniatures news page:

Quote
January news & updates

…Also going off to be master moulded are the first figures in my upcoming new range of 28mm scale East German troops. Perfect for larger scale 'Cold War gone hot' skirmish games. The first production packs will be out in February, with more coming later, so you can field an entire platoon, with support. Later in the year I'll be releasing West Germans to provide opposition.

I think they may be being sculpted by Tony Boustead who does the 20mm stuff for Underfire. He is also well known for the Empress Ultramoderns, so these should look pretty damned good! Underfire's Bill is a member here, so may be along with more solid information.

 :D

But yes, I do lament the fate of the Mongrel ranges. Such a waste of fine figures… And a massive pain in the ass for Newline.

The Mongrel East Germans were an incomplete range when Mongrel had them form what I remember a second set of castings was lost hence such a limited range even if you could obtain them unfortunatley

Platoon 20, now sold by East Riding miniatures do them in 20mm

http://shop.eastridingminiatures.co.uk/east-german-volksarmee-188-c.asp

They are a bit dated now but would probably do in a pinch if you were prepared to switch scales.

Elhiem do them in 20mm too. And there's a bunch of new ones due any time.

But if 20mm is unacceptable, I'd wait to see what Underfire come out with in Feb.

Thank you all! I told my buddy that the LAF would deliver, and you gave me exactly what I needed (except perhaps extra cash for another new project lol)!

That's great news about Underfire's new line. Talk about a coincidence! As I dug around their site, though, it looked like everything else is 20mm, and these will be their first figures in 28mm - is that right?

In all fairness, I don't have anything against 20mm in particular (and I can certainly understand the appeal of the availability of plastic vehicles). But I have a substantial collection of figures and terrain in 28mm, plus a decent allotment in the 6-15mm range. As my total of accrued material goes up, and my available hobby time goes down, I really want to maximize the use I get out of anything I add. A few squads of 80's military isn't the biggest burden to add to the painting queue, but it's much more appealing if they can also fight my Zombicide figures in Night of the Comet, and the middle-eastern village can see some double duty as Mos Eisley background, and the trees I already have don't look out of place, etc.

Pack 1 will eventually become a platoon command pack, whilst pack 4 will be a support pack. Atm I've only got the Leutnant & SVD marksman for pack 1 sculpted. The rest'll be getting done soon.

Hope this helps.
