Cluedo for VBCW and some flags
« on: January 24, 2015, 08:26:42 PM »
Some time ago, I got my hands on some plastic Cluedo minis for Interwar gaming http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=24117.msg302224#msg302224. I was mostly expecting to use them for Cthulhu-esque Pulpyness, but the idea of using them for VBCW has been slowly burrowing away in my mind and as I'm noodling around with some other VBCW ideas at the moment I'd thought I'd share some of my thoughts about these characters.

I decided I wanted - for VBCW gaming at least - to break up the group and use them as allies for VBCW factions.

In line with many of the VBCW games I've seen, there'll be a random card-activated element to this: the Cluedo characters will be able to be added to units during the course of the battle if you draw their card.

But due to the way the background of VBCW works, certain characters can only ally with certain factions. It doesn't seem likely to me that Mrs Peacock or Colonel Mustard would fight for the Socialists; on the other hand Reverend Green (other versions I believe have Mr Green the Industrialist but in the UK it's Reverend Green) would be likely to fight for the Anglicans.

Basically I plotted out who would fight for each faction, and then what their secondary loyalty would be in a two-way fight (because VBCW generally seems to have 3 factions, and even if the characters' prime faction isn't playing that's no reason they can't be used).

Cards should be used when they're drawn - it's possible to draw an ally of your army, who can give a stat-boost to one of your units, but it's also possible to draw an ally of your opponent's army. In this case clever placement means that, though one of their units gets a stat-boost, the character can be more of a distraction than a bonus. Because the special effect of the character takes some time to come into effect - Mrs White ha to give everyone tea, Colonel Mustard must show the lads the best way to do a bayonet charge etc, placing a character with the 'wrong' unit can be a waste of time. If Professor Plum is placed with an assault unit, his lecture on ballistics will take up their time and anyway, the player didn't intend to get them doing any shooting because they're supposed to be charging.

More details over on my blog... http://redorcsblog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/has-year-gone-by-so-fast.html

Today I've uploaded some Anglican flags - http://redorcsblog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/some-vbcw-flags.html

It keeps me busy while I get round to painting stuff...

If you feel like downloading and using them, please post a shot, as I haven't yet got round to doing so myself.

Just so happens I have an Anglican League standard bearer with a rather crappy flag - excuse me while I nick one of your designs (and follow your blog in the process) :)

Feel free - I pinched the best bits of the designs myself; obviously any chimp can make a St George's flag, but the slightly more complex stuff is all from the Flags of the World site, especially the Fictional Flags section - http://www.crwflags.com/FOTW/FLAGS/fic.html

As to the blog, I shall try to do a bit more on it! It's been a bit quiet of late as I've been busy with fantasy things (on another blog), but I've been thinking about VBCW a bit lately and it's re-inspired me.

Do not be put off using the snootier figures with the Reds, there were plenty of 'Champagne Socialists' then, as there is now.
Remember Nigel Scott-Palliser in When the Boat Comes In? He was a real toff and ended up fatally shooting the main character, Jack Ford, in Spain, during the Civil War.

Honestly, if you want to recalculate the factions, that's up to you - feel free to take the basic idea and use it whichever way you like. I'm sticking with what I've got, though, because I think it makes sense, and once I'd cracked the concept, it sort of flowed together. But it's not the only narrative that one could come up with for those 6 characters, I'm sure.

An update on the blog - I've added some flags for socialist factions. Feel free to use.
