Overlord's Flame-thrower (Updated: 10 Jun 15)
« on: February 01, 2015, 11:52:17 AM »
I'm going for something fairly simple, that fits in with a current project and is also part of my "It's Alive!" thread:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=5332.msg911336#msg911336

I was just going to enter the flamer-thrower itself and the ensuing fireball, but the base for only the flamer would be too small for the contest rules.  Therefore my entry will include one half of the 'tyrewall' entrance gateway on which it is positioned.

Ohhh promising! 8) 8)

Can I suggest wee bits of sponge glued together for the flames? It looks fairly real once painted.

Just to prove something is happening; the base for the tyrewall.  The bluefoam will support the wall of tyres and a walkway.  More substantial than the original, but a more robust piece of wargame terrain.  Just waiting for more tyres to arrive to progress.

That's what I have in mind; either some old clump foliage I have, or just a random piece of foam.

It seemed to make sense to do so, although it means there will be odd bits of the overall project scattered in different parts of the forum.

I've now textured the base with DIY filler and painted the base and supporting foam.  Painting this would be difficult to do once the build is finished.

Whilst the filler and paint were drying I put together the flamethrower using various odds'n'ends: Plastic rod/tube/strip, copper tube, brass rod and a piece of solder.

Flamethrower height against a miniature:

The brass rod will fit into a tube set into the tyrewall, so that the weapon can be removed for safe storage.

Very cool.  If I remember correctly, in the movie they had a hand pump that they used to spray it.  Are you going to add anything like that?

I'm not sure what hand pump you are referring to:

I'm assuming the silver cylinder is (gas?) for ignition, with the second line feeding the fuel to be burnt.

There was a winding mechanism for re-cocking the heavy crossbow mounted on the other side of the gateway:

Where are all the tyres coming from?

I got them from 2 sources:
Kids Globe Farming - Silo cover: Contains 50 identical tyres (20mm dia):

Replacement 'Corgi/Dinky' tyres from an Ebay seller.  I bought mostly 20mm plus some slightly smaller tyres:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/tony19452011/m.html?item=251797919980&hash=item3aa05358ec&pt=UK_ToysGames_DiecastVehicles_DiecastVehicles_JN&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

I have nearly 200 tyres now, but it did cost me around £25, with the 'Dinky' ones approximately double the cost of the toy ones.  This does however give me some variation rather than piles of identical tyres.  I also have a few larger diameter tyres/wheels from old 1/35 vehicle kits.  There will be some left over for further post apoc terrain.
