All Quiet on the Martin Front.......a cautionary tale!
« on: February 19, 2015, 03:10:15 PM »
Ok so I finally got started on my British Expeditionary Force for AQMF.  I prepared them, painted them in my usual style, base coat spray, overall highlight, paint detail, detail highlight then a good coat of Army Painter Dark Tone, left to dry over night (24hrs) then added a good coat of Army Painter Matt Varnish.....WRONG....the varnish must react with the resin and yes you've guest it it acts like paint stripper!!!!

The applied paint just sloughs off!!!!

So into a stripping mix and start again!!!!

Not impressed....

What he said!

Though, the crackle is an interesting treatment...

Sorry, I'll go now.

 :o indeed

I take it you had thoroughly washed the model in soapy water before starting, as that's the only thing I can think of that might have caused problems.

It's a shame the paint came off, though, as it's quite a nice pattern

Better luck with the second attempt

Did it also strip it from the metal components? It looks like it from the pic. If so, probably not the resin.

What the blazes?  First I've seen of that problem, and I've done a fair amount of their other resin kits.  That's really worrisome.

And here I figured it was just going to be a complaint about their slow fulfillment on the Kickstarter and lousy communications.

I don't think it was the resin either. Something must've been off with the varnish.

Hmmm... dunno what it is with AP; their products seem to vary in quality. I had a can of plack primer go all 'gritty' on the models, very annoying!

Good point.  Was it a new can, Bunny?  have you used it on anything else?

I can't see this being the resin either,  much more suspicious of the varnish. Environmental conditions could also ruin a varnish but I assume this model was inside.

It look more likely to be not enough time left between coats as I have had something similar happen when using shading varnish then matt varnish.  After I have finished painting the model I leave a week before putting on a gloss varnish or dipping varnish, then I leave it another week before putting on the matt varnish.  It is annoying to wait but this way I have had hardly any varnish issues (Just the one when I used the little bit of matt varnish at the bottom of a pot - bad idea).  What I tend to do is paint quiet a few figures ready for varnishing so do them in batches.

have to agree here I had a similar problem when I matt varnished over army painter dip before letting the dip dry completely (it was a 28mm metal mini)

now if I use dip I leave it for a few days in a warm place and then hit the models with a fan heater for a few mins before and after varnishing so the varnish dries quickly

Thanks guys,

I always leave at least 24 hours before I spray the anti shine matt varnish on.  It has happened on two of the resin models but not the metal ones I painted, dipped and sprayed at the same time?

Yes I had used the can of spray on loads of minis before and after.

All work done in room with a constant temperature.

I'll try again now I'm home...

I've had the same problem with two different cans of white from AP
