Looking for spider swarm miniature
« on: September 22, 2008, 03:49:28 PM »
Does anyone know of any spider swarm miniatures out there? By swarm I mean, bunches of little spiders that are close to "normal" size. I don't want a horde of 2 ft+ spiders.

I know GW did these figures for Lord of the Rings. But I was wondering if there were other options out there?

There are a few different swarms in the D&D range, there are two very good swarms in the "Desert of Desolation" range -

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mg/dod

demonweb swarm & rot scarab swarm.

Unfortunately these look more like giant red ants and large scarab beetles than spiders, but they are very useful pieces. Just over an inch in diameter with insects a couple of milimetres long.

The D&D sets have a limited run, but the Desert of Desolation should still be reasonably common on places like eBay.
Earlier sets might not be so easy to get hold of.

The "Unhallowed" range has a very good rat swarm that you might still find, but the spider swarm is quite an old one now. Very good, solid and sturdy, but perhaps hard to come by now.

Thanks for the offer Grimm.

The Demonweb swarm and Scarab swarm are also good suggestions. The prepainted collectible stuff comes up with some good inexpensive choices again. I agree about the spiders looking like ants, but maybe with a repaint they will look more like spiders.

I use these guys:

They say they only have one each, but they are cheap.
They do, however, try to keep their stock up.

Some of the common D&D pieces crop up quite cheaply on eg eBay.

We use quite a few of the creature types for Pulp/VSF/Gothic Horror/Dr Who/Stargate and have used some of the undead types as proxies for Wargods of Aegyptus games.

Some of the Star Wars figures can be quite useful too.

Black Tree do one (although it seems to be more seperate tiny figures on a base rather than an actual "swarm"):

http://www.black-tree-design.com/btdcat.php?ctry=uk&lng=gb&rangenum=1&typenum=23&qty=0&sub=&shp=&tot=

And they still have their interminable sale on, it seems, although you'd need good luck getting stuff from them in a reasonable time by all accounts. There's a thread about it somewhere...

Keeps players on their toes....

Battlestar Galactica (the original series) had an episode with carniverous insects kidnapping humans to use as hosts foe egg laying. There is at least one Dr Who series with the same theme. Ridley Scott (director of Alien ?) was approached to direct Dr Who early on (sadly wasn't available - that might have been interesting to see what he did with it), but the Alien idea mixes in easily. Then there are the "Brain Bugs" in the original film of Starship Trooper who just want humans for research.
As a game plot, there could be potential for a Stargate/BG/Dr Who/AVP/Starship Trooper blend, possibly as a Space Hulk variant ?

So insects/bugs/swarms of spiders etc are allways useful. Provided your players don't suffer from arachnophobia.

I want to post a public thank you to Grimm. He sent me two spider swarms for free. You are awesome Grimm! Very nice indeed, but then we all already knew that. :D

Once I get the various swarms painted I will post them here. Thanks for everyone's help finding figures.
