Looking for a ruleset
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:30:57 PM »
I find myself in search of a new ruleset.  I'm looking for a fantasy skirmish that focuses mainly on the big fantasy creatures but allows a squad or two of infantry as well.  It needs to have character/unit creation system with plenty of flexibility as far as powers, spells, and weapons.  It doesn't need to be extremely competitive as my group and I tend to focus more on narrative games than strict competition.  That being said, I don't want to just make a bunch of stuff up as we go along.

Epic Heroes fits most of the criteria here, but the monsters tend to die too easily in our experience, even with the extra survival traits they can take.  Pulp Alley seems like it could fit the bill, but even with the Perilous Island book, it doesn't have quite the customization I'm looking for in the monsters.  Strange Aeons fits pretty well except for needing more spells and a good creature build system.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Mierce Miniatures have a ruleset under development (Darklands) that is all about battles with warbands featuring big (like monstrously big) creatures.
There is a quickstart set and warband builder available for download and more information:

Given the range of figures they produce dealing well with big fantasy creatures is going to be critical!

A fairly new set is Open Combat (http://www.secondthunder.com/); I just had a quick look at the rules but you can customise the stats of the miatures you are using. The author is working on an expansion dedicated to monsters.

Epic Heroes fits most of the criteria here, but the monsters tend to die too easily in our experience, even with the extra survival traits they can take.

Now I'm curious, how do they die too easily? Do you mean they are Wounded and removed from play too easily, or they fail their Trauma Check in a Campaign and die too easily?

Do you have any sample profiles for the monsters that I can look at? The reason I ask is that in our play testing we never ran across an instance where Big Bastards and Monstrosities were being Wounded too easily. If anything it was just the opposite.  :D But since there is a wide variance of builds possible, I always like to see how people are representing creatures for their games.

Thanks,
Bob

I should have been more specific; I do mean Wounded.  It is possible that the we just don't know what we're doing as far as Epic Heroes/Brink of Battle is concerned.  I've been pushing for more playtime for it but it has been an uphill battle.  Most of the group is pretty stuck-in with Warmachine/Hordes, so anything that takes away from that struggles to see play-time.  That being said, I'll try to get one of the monster's stats posted.
