My cheapo Chaos warband, plus a Chronicle ogre.
« on: March 02, 2015, 07:42:17 AM »
So, as part of the "How to do Oldhammer" challenge I built a simple little Chaos warband using only "insultingly cheap" figures, many of them donated or sold at rock-bottom prices by kind people on this very forum. Here are the results:

The warband assembled!

The infamous Pusgobbler Filthpile, Champion of Nurgle.

Beastman followers carry Filthpile's standard.

All the champions have skull heads, which delayed the project a bit until a friend provided me with a Skaven one.

This project taught me that a) shields are fun, and b) the plastic flagellants kit is a fantastic source of spare parts.

People talk smack about the Mantic orcs, but I don't know; I think they look all right. Detail on the legs is a bit mushy. Also my first attempt at OSL because why not.

Fun with shields! I should have varied up the colours a little, but with only 21 models I wanted to have some strong visual unity.

And a connection to the banner.

You can see more on my blog: http://gonzohistorygaming.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/how-to-do-oldhammer.html

I also recently discovered an old Chronicle miniatures ogre (and thanks to the forum for identifying him) at a car boot sale. I have painted him for use in my D&D game, although I think the rather ... impressionistic ... paint job looks better in person. And not blown up to three times original size or whatever.

Excellent work! Cheap or not, they look great arrayed as a warband. The shields in particular look really effective!

That is a VERY COOL & PERSONABLE War Band...cheap does not necessarily mean poor quality. AND the Ogre looks SPLENDID. VERY WELL DONE!

Aren't Shields & Banners TERRIFIC? They are a GREAT way to express yourself AND add to the character of a miniature or a War Band.

This is so very cool. I like the spawn head on the champion.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words!

Yeah, that was a bit of serendipity. It's big, but not big enough to look unbalanced, just unhealthy. I have got a lot of mileage out of that kit over the years -- and that's after building a pair of spawn in the first place.

Fantastic work.  The shield freehand is particularly impressive.  A very nice diverse mix of figures that you've nicely painted into one unified unit.

Very characterful warband. I like in particular the "old-fashioned" painted shields, they make me feel nostalgic.

I love everything about this, especially the skull-head theme to tie the unit leaders together. The freehand on the shields is top stuff, I'm envious! You've inspired me to gather my orphaned miniatures that don't really fit anywhere and warband them up!

May I ask where you got the orc skull from?

I have no idea. It might be from a 40K kit; I do seem to have a lot of 40K parts lying around.

OK, I looked it up and it's one of these: http://megabitzshop.com/index.php?a=3392

And yes, slapping a theme on is a great way to combine disparate figures. Thanks for the kind words!
