The mission - Part 5

I thought that my men were all at sleep. But when I climbed the small ridge next where we have hidden the steam tank, I found Sergeant Thomas already there. "Couldn't sleep, sir?" I nodded. "Bad dreams..." He laughed."Aye... I dream of Earth, myself..." "Thomas... I have to tell you our orders. If something happens to me... If somehow I disappear..." he shook his head. "You won't, sir!" I put an hand on his shoulder. "Listen! We were ordered to destroy a Green Men's birthplace..." "A nursery?! That's insane..." "Yes. I've got something else to tell you... I've been having these dreams... I don't think that they're just dreams... I've just awake from one..." And I told him.

Thomas was looking at me with a strange face. "Listen, Thomas. I'm not getting mad. Just before now, she told me that she would send a strange creature - a kind of a dog - she said, to guide me to her. So if she really exists and if this is all true I'll meet this dog." Thomas scratched his head. "Will the beast come here?" "No. I must meet it away from you. Thomas. If I disappear you can go back. I didn't told you what our mission was... You don't need to do this." He looked at me with suspicion in his eyes. "That's why you ordered us to stop the furnace from the tank?" "No. The boiler is really leaking and you must fix it..." He nodded.

"Will we meet again?" I smiled. "I don't know, my friend. I'll be a deserter... But fate isn't written. What I know is that I didn't come to Mars to kill newborn babies." He nodded. "I agree. I only want to return Earth and see my wife and children again." I shook his hand. "I'm sure you'll..." Then I heard a dreadful sound. One I hand't heard since we left Earth. "Silence, Thomas. Don't make a sound." And the sound closed on us.

The mission - Part 6

With an eerie grace, the Grey Martian's Hexapod moved across the red land, it's silhouette silencing the sounds of the night. "Sht.." I said softly to Thomas. "Remember what we know from them... They don't see too well, but their hearing is acute. And as if only to prove me right, the beast stopped.

Slowly it turned, as if trying to see or hear something. The Steam Tank engine wasn't working. It would take hours to heat it up and even so, one solitary tank and 10 men weren't match enough to take on the dreaded Hexapod and its heat ray. Our only hope was absolute silence and the Gray's lack of will to search behind the crest. Even so my hand grasped my trusted revolver...

The mission - Part 7

For a moment it stayed there, sniffing the air, measuring the landscape, it's heat cannon at the ready. I knew that we couldn't do a thing while we spied it in complete stillness.

Then it moved away. The sound of it's six legs fading away as it propelled it in the red sands. Only after a while did we move and tried to shake the stiffness of our bodies. For a while we kept silent. The machines we came to destroy were again starting to show themselves. A cold dread filled me that moment.

The mission - Part 8

"I must go" and I smiled sadly to my dear friend. He nodded. "I'll take them back. What actions you won't take, we'll avoid." I've embraced him. "Thank you." "Do you think you'll find... the thing you're looking for?" I smiled. "I don't know. But if I don't try, I will never know, will I?" He gave me his canteen filled with water. "Take this. You'll need it." I accepted it. "If you find nothing, you double back. We'll be moving slowly after fixing the tank in the morning. I'll make sure of that." And then he brusquely left. I felt lonely and at the same time exhilarated by the prospect of my immediate future.

The Mission - Part 9

Morning was almost gone, I was starting to feel that leaving the company of my squad to pursue literally a dream had been a mistake when I finally saw the Muoll. A eight legged carnivorous, it was for all races in mars a kind of dog, loyal and friendly. We stopped both ten yards apart appraising each other. Fear and caution stood us still both.

Then, exactly like a dog, it was the first of both of us to decide to trust. It came to me and sniffed my hand and I patted it in its head. "Take me to your mistress, old boy", I said and as if it fully understood my request it turned back and walked lightly in its eight legs knowing that I would follow.
