Looking for Mini Milk Crates
« on: March 19, 2015, 01:50:12 AM »
All,
I have a bad habit of getting rid of buildings when I am done with a collection.  A few years ago, mini milk crates were to be had in every local Dollar Store in the US.  Lately however, I have been unable to find a single one.  Of course I now have a need for them having gotten into Post Apocalyptic and SciFi ground combat.  Has anyone in the States seen them?

Those are a bit TOO mini.  :)  The ones I am after are roughly 5 - 6 inch cubes.

Last I checked, Ikea had something similar.

I still see them on occasion; maybe you should try a different dollar store?

I'll look around. I tend to find them with large holes in the sides. A few years back, I found some that looked like they'd stack to proper office buildings for 15mm. Smart boy that I are, I have.... one.

Doug,
Right, the ones I am after have square "windows".

I saw some at couple months ago at dollar tree, but they had larger rectangle windows.  Still workable, but not quite as nice as the smaller windowed versions.

It might help your online search to look for CD or DVD crates which is what they are sized for.

You can see the rectangle window version here on the same table with the square windowed version (grey) the small sized version form office deppot which is now OOP I think (white) and the solid sided box version (OD green) which makes a great industrial building when greebled up

You can see more pics of them in use here:

And some older pics of them alongside infantry here:

If you paint them I recommend Krylon fusion or other plastic-specific basecoat. The Polypropylene they seem to be made of does not seem to like paint.

Try looking in the school & office supply sections in the discount department stores like Target or K-mart. Or maybe the close out stores like Big-Lots. Might be a little more than $1 but still quite cheap.
