28mm Historical sculpts
« on: March 24, 2015, 11:52:47 AM »
Hello
I'm a war gamer from Sweden and is a new member on this forum. I've been watching and reading for a long time but never posted anything of my own work.

Well now I thought I should change that..
Lately I've been trying to learn how to sculpt miniatures. I have only done seven sculpts so I'm still trying to figure it out. Enough with the talking here are some pictures of number 5,6,7.
They are supposed to be Swedish farmer militia from about 1600th century, who were called "allmogen".

Kind Regards

Hello! :)

And blimey, if that's your results after seven sculpts, I'm dead jealous.

Very nice and "natural" looking, would sit nicely alongside Perry minis I should think. Practice your mail a little bit maybe, it's pretty paintable as is already though. Is that "brown stuff" for the main sculpting? What material did you use for the weapons?

Hello again

Thanks everybody for your comments! I really appreciate them.

Very nice and "natural" looking, would sit nicely alongside Perry minis I should think. Practice your mail a little bit maybe, it's pretty paintable as is already though. Is that "brown stuff" for the main sculpting? What material did you use for the weapons?

Thanks for comparing me with the perrys :), I think I'm not holding their standard yet, but I think they are some the best sculptors. They are really superb at doing realistic and natural looking poses.
Here is a comparison picture with some perry wotr figures:

I've been trying some different putty's and the brown one is from privateer press, I don't know if it's the one people refer to as "brown stuff" but I like it, easy to sculpt with and becomes very hard when dry, but it's sometime hard to see details because of the color.
The polearm on the running figure is a perry halberd that I shaped to a spear and adding some putty to and the standard is also from perry miniatures, the axe is steelwire with a sculpted head.

I thought I will show some pictures of earlier and present work.

This is nr.2, an attempt to sculpt a Thracian peltast, his arms and hands became very oversized, but you can't see that in this picture  ;)

Nr3 is also a peltast, starting to get a hand on this, though his face and clothes are not good. He is also about 32mm..

this is the fourth one, a thureophoroi. I was pretty satisfied with this one, but he also became a bit to big..

More wip pictures of current works to come!

Kind regards

The Privateer Press website calls it 'brown/aluminium' (brown stuff's official name was* brown/aluminium, then brown/neutral), and your photos and PP's look very similar, so... yeah. :)

* Unfortunately I say 'was' because, to warn you against getting too attached to it: it's practically discontinued. These days it's only supplied as special orders that are too much for most small hobby suppliers. It looks like they haven't had any bites yet - it's not available anywhere, as far as I know.

Your latest pics are looking great, anyway. :) Looks like you've got a decent grasp of anatomy and cloth, right off the bat. And I also know too well the problem of sculpts growing a little too much!

Thanks!

Well I been drawing models for some years, so I have a decent knowledge of anatomy, But It one thing to draw on a paper and much more difficult i 3D i realized...

To bad about the Brown stuff I kind of liked it, on my latest sculpts I only used it for armour and weapons, because I think it's god at holding sharp egdes, and you can file it.
