Papal VSF Automaton
« on: April 05, 2015, 09:09:51 PM »
The clank is a repainted and modified Heroscape plastic fig. I added rivets made from finger nail jewelry to the pauldrons. The shield is a GW tread. There is an existing smooth shield on the mini I intended to add rivets to but the tread saved me some work. The priest is a 28 mm West Wind I've painted to be the mechanic.

Group shot of my Papal VSF forces so far. The Swiss Guard are from Brigade Games. The Bishop is from West Wind.

Hasn't worked for me, yet.  lol

I will say I was lucky, found similar to what I expected, though an even taller and blocker mechanical came to my mind. Even imagined some religious vestments. Not out of the question, GG?

Though, I fear you may have to start adopting some 40K lingo for Latinized 'holy order of engineers' nomenclature.  :D

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. The automaton fig was attractive to me because I already owned it. I lucked into a complete Heroscape game w/additional units several years back at a thrift store. It's my 1st time putting rivets that small on a mini that small. I consider it a good proof of concept. I've got a larger clank, also from Heroscape, in the painting que I'll post when finished.

Understood; I just meant you might add a 'stole'. Or, would that be too like an Adeptus Titanicus knight?  lol

I did try painting papal insignia, silver and gold crossed keys, on the pauldrons but my paint job was lacking. Adding a stole is intriguing I haven't done any sculpting. I know "green stuff" is the medium of choice for such activity which leads me to ask, what is green stuff and where is it acquired?

It's a two-part modelling putty (blue & yellow) that when mixed together goes green & starts to cure, hardening fully overnight.  GW stock it, along with a handy sculpting tool - probably at a mark up compared to other sources, but they reliably have it.  It's a sufficiently generic substance that it should be fairly easy to find elsewhere though.  I'm not a sculptor by any stretch of the imagination, but I can generally use to add little things to a model that look reasonable.  I'm sure there are tutorials on the web if you fancy giving it a go.

Hmm, now that I know those Swiss Guard figures are available I'm almost tempted to start a small Papal force myself. I already have the West Wind clerical figures and a few armed monks....
I'm not a mercenary. Killing's more of a hobby for me.

Ghengis thanks for the heads up on green stuff. Matakakea the Swiss Guard troopers are from Brigades WW1 Western Front line, they're French Chasseurs Alpins. The officer is from Brigade's Storm in the East, the Nestor Makhno & Fyodo Schuss pack.

Firstly, I have ideas, and as I never 'do', I don't even bother with do as I 'say'.  ::)

However, you might consider just printing, even outlines, on paper;  cut, coat with something varnish like, and drape over model til dry.

I think of it more as a banner, not clothing.

Wonderful job of repurposing the French Alpine troops.  What (if anything) makes the Automaton specifically Papal ?
