Rocks - with a surprise centre?
« on: April 15, 2015, 11:45:11 PM »
Poundland in the UK are selling these key rocks. They are made of high density resin, flat on the base with a rectangular cavity intended to hold a house key which can be accessed and used by someone who knows the secret.

It has struck me that one gaming use might be to scatter a few across a gameboard with a random surprise tucked into the cavity. Say a sniper, or an event card, or nothing. The rocks can be "shuffled" so no-one knows which one holds what. When troops pass within a short distance the cavity is examined...surprise for everyone?

At a pound each it would be possible to get a few without breaking the bank.

I have to say that after looking at your post, and then at your signature, I did have a good chuckle!  lol

Still, a very good idea nonetheless - thanks for the tip. :)

When opened, do the two halfs sit flat? The part shown with the key in looks flat, but does the other side have a protrusion to join them?

I am thinking that 1 key rock, would make two on the table, as if half the rock was in the ground?

I think they are only half a rock - not two halves that join together. You therefore put something on the ground, then place the hollow rock over the item to conceal it.

So the white bit with the key on it is the base that clips in.

Might keep and eye out for these in the pound shops.

Interesting idea... but it would not work well with my usual players. There's always one or the other who takes new terrain elements in his hand to look at it!  ::)

So, when in my scenario some artefacts are hidden in the terrain, I write it down on my scenario sheet instead of placing them at the beginning.
