and i just started to paint my carlists and ordered the first bunch of moros. so we expand in both camps, wich is good. still i`'m not too shure about the "kick you in the butt"-aspect, but i`ll try my very best.  ;)

and yes, i would love it to do some "rematch" in the near future.

Hi,

after all your kind posting I thought to introduce the players from last weekend in " the town that never was " I also attach some more pics from our final game that weekend.

These are the Republican players. Chris and Florian.

These three are the Nationalist.
Maik ( spelling right ? ) Hazel and me ( from left to right )

The last battle was a meeting engagement. Here we see the Moros moving through the river bank. They are covered by a lmg section. The Carlist hide behind a house.

US Pilot Mike Hunninghouse was pretty busy that weekend. The war correspondant was shaken after the attack.

This was a brave action by the Carlists. Under a hail of lead they charged over the street to reach the house on the other side. Republicans are inside the house. Behind the house was a T-26 and on the right are more Republicans. The little stones are supression markers.
You can make them pretty easy. They look better on the tabletop than coins or poker chips and the best thing is you dont have to make notes during a game.

Same situation another view. The Moros have captured the HMG and close in on the house. We stopped playing at that stage because the Republicans had too much casualties to continue the battle.

Thanks for reading.
Björn

Wonderful looking game chaps, the terrain is spot on, the buildings look great and the figures are beautiful. :)

Great looking game very interesting period of history. I have a very short introduction to the spanish civil war which I shall now delve into.

Still unsure as to who side was what, when you talk about republicans I assume thats the carlists, internationals, church etc...

The nationalists were the army ?

Republikans where the leftists, nationalists the right. But with SCW you have so many factions that it's really hard to get an overview.

Republican factions: Social Democrats, Communists of all directions, Anarchists, Unions, international brigades (communist volunteers). Most Assaldos (Aussault Guards, armed police mostly in the cities) fought for the republic, most of the marine, too, plus part of the army (though unreliable) and even a few Guardias Civil (armed rural police). Russian advisors and pilots.

Nationalist factions: Most of the army, foreign legion including Moro mercenaries, most of the Guardia civil, some Assaldos, part of the navy, Falange (spanish fascist party) and carlist (catholic monarchists devoted to a sideline of the royal house) militias, catholic church (though not with own units), italian army, german advisors, pilots and 8/8-batteries.
If you come for the king, you better not miss (Omar)

It's kinda complicated, but to try and make it simple...

The Nationalists were Franco's mob, and were the conservative, pro-Catholic Church, anti-Communist side. The Carlists (Monarchists) and Falange (Fascists) were also on this side. They were the rebels, as the war started with an attempt at a swift military coup to overthrow the Left-Wing government by the Right. When the coup failed to take the country in its entirety, Spain fell into civil war. This is the side that Hitler and Mussolini supported.

The Republicans (or Popular Front) were the forces of the government. They consisted of a wide range of political viewpoints, from pro-democracy centrists through to Socialists, Revolutionary Communists and Anarchists. As you can imagine, these various viewpoints didn't always get along too well. The International Brigades were on this side, and it's the side that Stalin supported (for a while).

Of the pre-war Spanish Regular Army, the Peninsular Army was split on who to support, I believe, but I think mostly went with the Nationalists. The Army of Africa was on the Nationalist side.

I think all that is right. If I've made any howlers then someone better informed should chime in.

Well said.

My father-in-law (now deceased) fought for the Republicans and served as a fighter pilot flying the I-16 Mosca.  He was a centrist.  His friends from the war, who he used to meet with almost everyday to take the sun, were quite a mixed bag politically (mostly from the left) but definitely a colorful bunch who enjoyed each others company.

Strange bedfellows, indeed.

International communists... Perfect freedom fighters.  ;)
Wasn't Erich Mielke (ex-Stasi General) a political commisar in Spain? I think his job was to organize executions of non-communists. No matter on which side we Germans helped out, we were good at killing people.
