Help needed - Greek Gods
« on: October 11, 2008, 04:34:28 PM »
Help!

I'm putting together some terrain for an English landscaped garden and I need statues of Greek-style  gods, godesses and appropriate mythological creatures. Figure scale can be anywhere from 30mm to 40mm. Can anyone recommend suitable figures? Manufacturers with quick delivery would be especially useful.

I know Chiltern do some Greek gods but the sculpts look too chunky for the sort of statues I have in mind.

The Foundry Greeks might do:
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/WG/index.asp

Specifically these pages:

http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/WG/34/index.asp
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/WG/WG1.asp

Delivery is normally quick (I have never had any problems) but they're not particularly cheap and unless you are buying other packs or a book/ruleset you will have postage on top.  :'(

How about these 40mm female hoplites and general classical semi-naked ladies:

Reaper has a Demon Prince (Dark Prince?) that works good. And look for 40mm Hoplite ranges, I know of at least one (but have no tme to search for the name and URL at the moment)

It is Chiltern who do some, they are bit large and chunky to fit with other ranges but would be great as statues.

I have some gashapon ones somewhere - I will see if I can find them. They are actually statues on plinths too.

Some of the Foundry Nymphs might work.

As could some of the Eureka Amazons. They have quite slim proportions so they'd be suitable if, as you say, you don't like the chunky look of the Chiltern figs. Check out the command figures in the second link, in particular. The standard bearers and musicians have a rather modest, statuesque look that I think fits perfectly for a Victorian (or whatever) garden.

A final suggestion would be a Greek Goddess figure that I notice Tradition of London is selling. It seems to be a very old 30mm sculpt. It's at the bottom of the "Harlequinade" range.

Hasslefree has a very nice 40mm Artemis:

Tatiana, Queen of the fairies, would also look lovely in a garden fountain:

Here's a rather interesting Minotaur from Prince August. He seems to be striking a very artistic, statuesque kind of pose (or he's trying to scratch an itch in a very private place, I can't tell from that angle lol ), and he has human feet rather than hooves, so he'd fit the classical Greek depiction of a Minotaur better than most other miniatures out there.

You and I think the same Rhod. And you've got an eye for that classic look. Say, those Amazons you use for your Zamoran project, which brand are those? They look very statuesque to.

Unless I'm mistaken about which figures you mean, it's the same Eureka Amazons I mentioned above. It's the command figures I'm using in particular.

Eureka's picture, not mine. I'll be doing a head swap on the one in front. The one on the far left will also have its helmet replaced/remodolled into some non-martial piece of headgear. The point is to use them as priestesses, court officials, Vestal Virgin types, etc.

I'd love to find some more figures of this sort (I know of the Foundry and Black Tree ones already). I even think that if I was ever to commission some miniatures (which I could never afford at the moment) it'd be some sword-and-sandal type civilians.

And that reminds me, another potential source of Greek-style statues would be the Greek Civilians and Elders from Black Tree. At least some of them could be re-imagined as gods, of a more modest portrayal.
