Very nice.  It has given me some ideas for my own Republican Roman army.

The 8th update to my Republican Roman Army.

Hearing that I wasn't happy with the Vitrix archers, Keith of Aventine Mins kindly sent me some Greek archers.
I've got to be honest, I'm happier with what I've done with these than the previous batch.

I made some changes...(!)...I added beards, neckerchiefs and tunic patches.
With a view of making them look as though they are on campaign, I dry-brushed the paint onto the tunics.

Once again, my cats Boots and Scruff kindly donated their whiskers for bow strings, (which are great for use with AFV's and radiomen).

Another view:

For the next bunch of Princips I wanted a little more drama than the arrow in the shield mini so undertook, with Aventine's permission, my first head swap.

More later.

Thank you for looking.

Stuart.  :-)

shame on you Laugh

In my defence, Vitrix sent them to me for free, so it would be churlish not to have used them...

 ;)

I plan one unit of Princips using these transfers, the Roman equivalent of the 'dirty dozen'...

Hi Stuart,

Lovely painting!   I do like the gritty archers.

What did you use for the arrow through the shield?  I need to do some similar minis and I've been scratching my head over how to make the arrows.

Best, Simon

Cheers Simon, gritty is what I'm after!
The 'parade ground' infantry can be painted later.

I was all set to make some from brass rod and Duro, when I had a 'Duh!' moment and realised that I had some Vitrix arrows to hand.

I think it makes practical sense to have a broken arrow in the shield...if not simpler!

Stuart.  :)

An Aventine Princips command set.

I had to re-work the hands a little and added wrist jewellery, a ribbon, a beard and re-posed the shield bearers arms.

And here is how the unit looks when placed together:

Victrix; Splendid!  I have the archers and slingers box, I shall nick some arrows from it.  Broken arrows is a good idea, too.

Thanks, Simon

My 9th update:

A few Velites added to the colection; not many changes, one mini has jewellery and a broken arrow added to his shield, (the white residue, caused by the varnish, has now been removed):

Another view:

Not the greatest painter of horses, so I thought I'd make a start on the mounted command set and see how I get along.
I changed a few things on this mini, I swapped the Aventine horse for a larger piece from A&A, removed the sword pommel from the scabbard and exchanged the right arm for one swinging a sword. Added reins to the left hand and attempted to paint the horse...

Another view:

More to follow later in the week.

Thank you for looking.

Stuart.   :)

Very nice additions. Effective painting on the velites' shields, I like that. :)

Wearing my nerd hat, though, I'd avoid this mounted officer in a Republican Roman army. His 2nd/3rd century equipment is rather conspicuous, especially on a 'character model'. But that's just me, of course.

I'm not enamoured with a mounted command, it be nice to hear some thoughts on this subject and perhaps hear some advice about alternatives.

Well, what about the command figures by Aventine (LINK)?

For mounted generals there's also Crusader and Foundry (only some foot figures wear noticeably later equipment). Warlord's EIR commanders could fit the bill as well.
Rather tiny but perhaps okay as one-offs are the nice character figures by 1st Corps, here and here.

Thank you for the tips Doc. 8)

I've painted the Aventine RR50 set, which I was happy with.
Undoubtedly, I'll order the time correct mounted generals set.

I'm painting some 1st Corp Triarii at the moment and I found them easy to paint.

I'm not quite sure I'll ever paint a unit as dirty as this bunch of Princips:

A different angle:

I made numerous changes to the arm poses.

I have another bunch of Triarii to finish and then I'm making a  start on the Hastati.

Thank you for looking.
