campaign dress, parade dress or both. URGENT
« on: May 21, 2015, 08:06:34 PM »
Just about to order my French for the Peninsular War. Yes, OK, I get it that campaign dress is more accurate but, Wow that parade dress makes them look like right sexy buggers. I wouldn't mix parade and campaign in a unit, but should I do one style or both.

As to it being urgent, this French order is part of the first commitment to the period. Typically I tie myself in with a biggie. This one (including some odds and sods for a SYW completion) will be worth about £2000. So it is lots of units at once. I need to decide within the next 24 hours.

Please help,

James

Agree with Aly, why cover up all those glorious uniforms in drab greatcoats, shako covers etc.

Hi Aly,

I seem to remember us saying that in Napoleonics lies the end of ambition. I'm hoping to get in and out with a few thousand for the Peninsular - there are so many other things I want to do that I dearly hope our conversation, though a bit tongue in cheek, was wide of the mark. I aim to spend no more than four years painting this stuff. After that, who knows.

I like the idea of different types of uniform depending on morale grade. For instance elites in full dress, average troops in campaign dress (like habit veste and overalls) and poor troops in greatcoats and forage caps.
That way you get to paint all the different types and you can instantly recognise their morale grade when playing on the table.

I have done as Jeff suggests.  Also you can go by Brigade - Lets you know which unit is from which brigade readily.

I prefer parade dress. The uniforms are what first drew me to the period.

Personally I would do all campaign dress, and paint them the dirtier the better, make them as different individually from each other as you can, but have that common thread of the blue tunic tying them all together.
