Home Made Tufts and Flowers
« on: May 21, 2015, 10:32:24 PM »
Making my own grass tufts and flowers. Great fun to do and tremendously cheaper than buying pre made.
Hope you like them.

I did a series of articles on groundwork and making tufts for the ACW Gamer and Early American Wars E-Zines.
It would not be fair to the publisher to post the tutorial here. Sorry.

+1   :o

don't make our mouths watering, give us the food!   ;)

These gras things look awesome. Heki does it very well, too, but also a bit on the expensive side. Ziterdes got this too, but they are way to identical for a natural looking.

So, I am interested in a how to as well

EDIT
been too late.
I see, then maybe a link to that magazine or distributor or something?

There's a guys that sells homemade tufts on ebay as well as everything needed to create them yourself.

These look great. I have tried to make some with my home-made fly-swatter conversion and the came out nothing like these.

What glue are you using?

Same question here.  I have a fly swat conversion too and cannot get those results even mixing three or four different cut flocks.  My glue always settles and do not look right.

You have to use a "tacky" glue like Aileen's Fast Grab or Super Tacky Quick Grab.
Regular PVA is too weak to support the strands. Tacky glues are thicker and stay tacky even after 2 or 3 passes, so more of the grass will stick. DO NOT use Hob E Tac from Woodlands Scenics as it never fully sets up.

Use tacky glue
Make multiple passes
Use a toothpick to prop falling grass up and seperate grass that has become intermingled.

That's as much as I can say without revealing the article.

Yes, this is all a bit silly, dancing around things awkwardly. If you do want to support the publisher and do not wish to describe the technique in detail, then please do link or describe a way to purchase copies of this tutorial.
