Waterloo Diorama Celle (Special 28mm Miniature!)
« on: May 22, 2015, 09:59:45 AM »

On the last long weekend we have (that are Heiko, Koppi, Vasa, John, Klaus, Dirk and I) built up a diorama in Celle under the direction of Jens. The theme of the diorama is naturally Waterloo … on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the battle of 18 June 1815. A few years ago some members of this team designed different Waterloo diorama in Hamburg, Braunschweig and also, as in this year, in the beautiful half-timbered town of Celle. The Bomann Museum in Celle, where our diorama was created, has a strong connection to Hanover military history and so it is no surprise that the layout and the design has its focus on the Hanoverian troops and the KGL.

Thursday morning, all starts with the discharge of the cars …

The material and the miniatures are sorted and stored …

The substructure and the layout of the terrain are discussed …

Yet we are all skeptical about whether the concept of the museum, which has two separate dioramas, will also be visually appealing, each with a model of the farm La Haye Sainte …

In an small room nearby, we discovered the little diorama, which we had already built in early February for the museum. It shows the combined square of Hanoverian battalions Bremen and Verden, approximately 1,000 soldiers during the battle. The exhibit served in recent weeks as a teaser for our big diorama …

Incredibly 95% of all troops were painted by one person of our team … and incredible Dirk also painted still during the construction …

Finally it comes to the landscaping and placement of the miniatures. In contrast to our earlier dioramas, the figures were not completely interspersed with model grass, but inserted in prefabricated terrain features …

Some LEDs were installed, which will visually show events on the battlefield …

It is going well. The attack of the French infantry...

And the British and Hannover squares on the western side of the battlefield take shape…

A great view from a ladder. From this perspective you can see the two separate dioramas. The separation in the center is intended to indicate the two temporally different battlefield events. The farm La Haye Saint on the outer edge is an orientation for the visitor…

Here are the first pictures of the finished diorama. The whole thing is in 28mm scale , has a length of 12 meters (6 each part), a depth of 5 meters and is equipped with more than 15,000 miniatures …

More soon …

For the first time I've saved the pics in a post to keep for inspiration. Impressive work, my admiration for your painter and for all the team for making it happen.

Indeed. An achievement. Although i feel that the word does not convey the amount of work that has gone into this project nor the pleasure that many people derive from it. Cheers. ;-)

Great display but I really love the poster. Napoleon has the furtive and slightly guilty look of a man caught tweaking his own nipples.
