Plastic Romans figures for the Gallic Wars?
« on: May 22, 2015, 10:03:32 PM »
Hello,

I am struggling to identify the figures I need for Gallic Wars.

I did google the topic for a few days already and basically found two possible solutions from Warlord:

either the Gallic wars set with square shields and lorica, or the Caeasar set with oval shields.

a) Should I go actually with the Caesar set?

b) What other set should I add (cretan archers? Greek skirmishers, Gallic cavalry?)

Any advice for plastic figures?

thanks a lot for the help,

Brax

For Caesars wars in Gaul go for the Caesar set. Then I would say stick with Gallic and German Allies/opponents.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

The most appropriate plastics probably are:

WARLORD GAMES: Caesarian Romans
VICTRIX: the following packs should be useful
Greek Peltasts, Javelinmen, and Slingers
Greek slinger reinforcement pack
Greek archer reinforcement pack

I believe Victrix also plan on doing Numidians and Spanish, which would make good auxiliaries.

WGF Numidians are good for a lot of eras (read kind of generic), are easy to assemble (though I never got around to painting mine), and relatively cheap.  On the down side they always felt a little static to me.

Also the romans from Wargames Factory are correct.
In warlord you have 2 sets. 1 with pilum and 1 with gladius. miniatures are the same with diferent weapons.
Caesar also employed both gallic and germanic cavalry so you can use both.

thanks all for the comments, here is what I have purchased eventually:

Warlord:
Caesarian romans with pilum
Caesarian romans with gladius

Wargames Factory:
German cavalry
German infantry
Numidians

Victrix
Greek Peltasts, Javelin men and slingers

A bit expensive, but I can re-use the extra figures for other projects, including opponents and I value plastic a lot for its (lack) of weight.

again thanks for the great pointers, it really helped.
