Oldhammer Wood Elves for Dragon Rampant (Update p2 1.7.15)
« on: June 18, 2015, 07:00:05 PM »
I bought a load of Oldhammer Elves of EBAY a couple of years ago with the original intention of painting them up to add to my 90s High Elves. However, after painting the general, it all stalled.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago Dan Mersey sent me a draft copy of his upcoming Osprey release 'Dragon Rampant' as a 'thank you' for play testing his Colonial rules and I got the Fantasy bug again. So I decided to drag the Oldhammer Elves out and sort out a classic Elf army for those rules. Those old 80s sculpts just scream 'Wood Elf', so that's what I decided on. Accordingly, I rebased the General I'd already painted and refreshed his colour scheme to be more 'Wood Elf', using a host of greens, plus ochre and terracotta. Then I looked at the armoured knights I had begun all those months ago. I had already done all the mail, plus the armour plates on the horses, so although I've largely abandoned the 'Dallimore' painting approach due to worsening eyesight, I decided I'd press on and complete them in that style, leaving the archers, close-combat infantry and war dancers to be done in my 'dip and highlights' style. Here's the result on the first two cavalry (plus the General). I was pleased to pick up some 90s GW Wood Elf decals off EBAY and they really make the shields, I think... The General can be fielded as a 'singled model unit' functioning like a unit of 6 knights by himself, or can be fielded with these two knights to be a 'reduced model unit', functioning as a unit of 6 knights normally would. I intend to paint another 4 knights to give me lots of options going forward, but they don't half take ages to do!!! I have a unit of armoured infantry and a unit of archers in progress too...

I hope you like the pics...

Looking good! I'm starting to prep & prime all of this range too. I love to see other people's work on my favorite Elf models.  Keep the pics coming!  :-*

Those shields are lush.  :D All the greens and gold look good too. Great all over.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago Dan Mersey sent me a draft copy of his upcoming Osprey release 'Dragon Rampant' as a 'thank you' for play testing his Colonial rules

Proper old skool goodness.

I have that general figure, one of my all time favourites, and am trying to work him into my Melnibonean cavalry.
Very inspiring.
