Marches of the Soldier King - Prussian Military Music
« on: June 19, 2015, 04:39:51 PM »
Hello, all.

While on vacation I came across a CD that might be of interest to Prussian/SYW/WAS enthusiasts and those with an interest in military music.  It's a collection of regimental marches composed during the reign of Frederick William I of Prussia, used on parade and, under Frederick II, in the field.  In the first part of the 18th century, and especially for the pragmatically minded Frederick William I, military music was almost exclusively used for signaling and to convey orders and wasn't meant to be melodic or inspirational.  It's quite different from the thrilling, thumping marches that came into fashion a few decades later.

I've put it on YouTube in case you'd like to give it a listen.

Hope you like it.
Now what is this whole life of mortals but a sort of comedy, in which the various actors, disguised by various costumes and masks, walk on and play each one his part, until the manager waves them off the stage?
