With all the batch-painted monsters I've finished recently, I figured I deserved a new hero as a reward. This one took me a while, and he's been waiting for his finishing touches for ages. But finally: a new Dwarf Warrior!

This is the new anniversary Grombrindal mini from Games Workshop. Yes, I bought a very expensive miniature and chopped off his massive scenic base. But he's such a great figure, so no regrets!

Besides, I've painted so many elves for this project that the Dwarfs were getting annoyed with me...

A few details:

I tried to follow the White Dwarf painting guide for the cloak - I messed up the knotwork a little, so it came out just a bit too big. But that's the finest line I can paint with my eyesight these days, so I'm still pretty happy with it  lol

You should be happy, he looks great! The fact that you painted on the knot work at all put it a step above most figures. (At least the ones I’ve seen.)

Awesome.
Good job getting rid of the scenic base. Can't stand those things myself.

That's such a vast improvement over the comical 'scenic' base.  Great work.

Continuing the Dwarf theme, I also painted up a brand new Warrior - the unofficial "Dwarf Goldhunter". I used another classic metal mini for this one - Krudd "Mad" Mattock from the old Grudge of Drong campaign pack. A lovely figure from my favourite era of Dwarfs, and another step towards counter-balancing all those pesky elves in my collection  lol

Beautiful work, as always. That black orc boss is just excellent - that head-swap, zig-zag pattern and scratches on armour work a treat.
Both new dwarfs are excellent as well. Do you mind sharing your paint scheme for Krudd Mattock's pickaxe handle? Every time I try to paint light wood colour it seems to end up a disaster and I just move to darker brown.

Many thanks!

Whenever I paint light wood, I start with Citadel Zandri Dust (not too far removed from VMC Khaki, if you aren't using Citadel). I recently discovered a good shade for this is thinned down Skeleton Horde contrast paint (or Vallejo Xpress Bag o' Bones - I have both and use them interchangeably). Then go back to the base colour and add progressive amounts of a lighter shade: If you want to go warmer, add bone (which is what I did here). If you want to go more neutral, add Pallid Wych Flesh (Citadel) or Vallejo Deck Tan.

Thanks! I think I've got Vallejo paints that are close enough for me to give this recipe a try. :)

They are very nice.
I just wish they still had the old Kev Adams head. I wonder if there is a place to purchase Kev Adams gobbo heads separately for conversion parts... time to google I think.

I used to have that for my renaissance goblin range sculpted by Kev. Unfortunately, it seems the current owner hasn't done anything with the range.

YOU SHALL NOT PASS! <ahem> Sorry, wrong franchise.

I painted up another alternative Wizard recently. Not because I need one, you understand, but because I found the model in an old stash of metal minis, and immediately got distracted as is my wont  lol

I always loved the old Empire Battle Wizards, and I think this guy really stands up.

I considered painting some kind of fancy pattern on the cloak, but in the end those sharp creases really put me off trying. Decided on a simple, neat paint job instead.

Beautiful work on that wizard!

Interesting choices in your colour palette- the blue and white main colours are a great pairing (as thousands of high elves painted around the world demonstrate). The purple cloak and skullcap briefly gave me pause, but I think they work too, especially with the complementary yellow on the high collar, the inside of the cape, and trim on the tunic. Super smooth shadows and highlights, too.

Thank you! And good observation: I took a while planning this miniature, because there was maybe one area too many for my liking that needed to be a distinct colour. I was torn between dark blue or purple for the cloak, but in the end decided he looked like a flamboyant, ostentatious fellow, who'd definitely be bold with his colour choices  lol
