I get it that some things about J.J. Abrams' style as a director can grate on peoples nerves <cough> lens flares <cough>, but from what I've read, he does not care for CGI, and prefers a physical model or set whenever it's practical to do so.

Thank God.
I loved and adored the original LOTR movies beyond reason.
I detested large swathes of The Hobbit which just looked like a giant computer game.
Too much CGI is a very bad thing that ruins movies.

Take Jaws for example, the jumping of the shark was ridiculous but you suspend disbelief due to the build up and escalating action through the film,

The Hobbit films unfortunately as well as a lot of movies these days rely on CGI at a detriment to the story and believability of the movie, the original LoTR films had the right amount of CGI and practical effects. The Star Wars prequels had an unholy reliance on CGI and It looks like the new film will have the right amount of each.
