Illusionist Warband
« on: July 28, 2015, 11:09:09 PM »
Hi everyone - thought I'd share my WIP warband. I've chosen the Illusionist school of magic, as I like the theme and the associated trickery it implies.  >:D

I've found the models really easy to put together, and nice to paint. I've gone for an blue/green theme for the colours - as ice and fir trees are the things that spring to mind when I imagine Frostgrave.

My apprentice and wizard. The apprentice is a conversion using body and arms from the Frostgrave soldier box, and a Jester head from an old Bretonnian sprue I had lying around. The Wizard is from Otherworld miniatures, and was originally in line to be used as a Dungeon-crawler character.

The treasure hunter (Otherworld) and another thug made from the soldier box.

A gigantic hound! Courtesy of Warlord Games' Celtic range.

I haven't played any games yet, but my lineup will be:

Wizard
Apprentice
Treasure Hunter
Crossbowman
Archer
Archer
Thug
Thug
Thief
Warhound

I'm curious...why will the wizard suddenly not be suitable for a dungeon crawl?  I plan on using my entire dungeon crawl range for Frostgrave.  I'll have snow on the table but not their bases and it'll be fine.  The whole attraction to me with Frostgrave was that I already had all the minis I'd need for it.

That's just my confusing wording - meant that I'd originally bought it for that purpose, but I'll now be using it for both (and the Otherworld skirmish game, when that comes out!).

You painted the jester quickly.  I like them, and have always preferred the bright, cartoony style of miniature painting since they are much easier to see from a distance than more muted colors.

Your band of hunters is coming along very nicely.  Looking forward to seeing the rest of them.

How did you do the black-lining?  Was it done after painting the base colors, or did you paint the base colors leaving the creases black?

Also, how did you paint the faces?

How many highlights did you make, and did you use washes for shading?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, but I like this style since the miniatures pop and would like to emulate it.

Nice looking warband and a bright choice of colours. Thanks for sharing. Where is the brazier from?

Pretty sure that's a part of the Frostgrave plastic soldiers box.

I like the paintjob, but dislike the colours.   lol  I have some weird avoidance for emerald greens and royal blues!

Nope. No brazier in the box set. It could be from the Bretonnian bowmen box set? I know that has a brazier.

Definitely Bretonnian.
