Latin Kingdom of Constantinople Variation
« on: July 30, 2015, 02:06:23 AM »
I'm putting together a hypothetical army list of a state based on the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople. I'm a little lean on sources regarding the use of native Greek elements in its military. If anyone has any information or can point me to source materials I'd appreciate it.

As an avid collector of lists I've come across one from an old DBM army list book (IV). It may, or may not, be of use. It starts in 1204 AD (I assume the fall of Constantinople) and, for the Latin Empire, ends in 1261.

DBM Book 4
32. Romanian Frank 1204 AD - 1311 AD

Warm. Ag 1. WW, Rv, H(S), H(G), O, V, RGo, Rd, BUA.

C-in-C - Irr Kn(S) @ 22AP                                                                       1
Sub - general - as above                                                                         1-2
Feudal knights and esquires - Irr Kn(S) @ 15AP                                        9-18
Military order brother knights and sergeants - Reg Kn(S) @ 15AP               0-2
Greek archontes - Irr Cv(O) @ 7AP                                                          0-6
Frankish spearmen - Irr Sp(I) @ 3AP                                                       0-6
Frankish crossbowmen - Irr Bw(O) @ 2AP                                                0-8
Frankish or Melingoi archers - Irr Ps(O) @ 2AP                                          0-8
Melingoi javelinmen - Irr Ax(O) @ 3AP or Irr Ps(S) @ 3AP                        *8-10
Greek archers _ IRR Ps(O) @ 2AP or Irr Bw(I) @ 3AP                              *12-32

Venetian allies:
  Venetian ally general - Reg Kn(O) @ 22AP                                             *1
  Venetian knights - Reg Kn(O) @ 12AP                                                     0-1
  Venetian crossbowmen - Reg Bw(O) @ 5AP                                            *1-4
  Venetian bellatores - Reg Ax(S) @ 5AP                                                    0-2
  Venetian galleys - Reg Gal(F) @ 2AP                                                       0-3

Only Latin Empire from 1211 AD to 1214 AD:
Byzantine prisoners - Reg Cv(I) @ 6AP                                                      0-6
Seljuq allies - List: Seljuq Turk (Bk 3)
Trapezuntine allies - List: Trapezuntine Byzantines (Bk 4)
Only Latin Empire from 1239 AD to 1261 AD:
Cuman allies - List: Cuman (Kipchak) (BK 3)

I've left out all the Achaean Frank parts. Melingoi are described as Slav hillmen. Archontes described as former Byzantine pronoia holders regarded by Franks as feudal gentry. Greeks are also described as serving willingly.

Many people find the old DBM army books useful for casual day dreaming. Hope this advances your cause some what.
