Buildings in 16th Century Ireland?
« on: August 12, 2015, 02:30:35 PM »
Working on doing an English vs Irish game using the Elizabethan mods for Lion Rampant.  What would rural Irish buildings look like in 16th century Ireland?

The buildings i have used from Hudson and Allen would be perfect for it. I have also used the same buildings for Border Reiver games.

I should think that most rural buildings would be 'wattle and daub' - Celtic round houses may still have been the style, or maybe square 'Saxon' style houses had become the fashion?

Non-Irish settlers may have used the court-yarded farm style for added security, maybe in stone?

I'm sure there must be an 'Irish historic buildings' site on the intermaweb somewhere?

I am thinking wattle and daub for the peasants and stone towers for the lords.

I would be interested in what the OP is going to use for figures and how he plans his campaign. I have lately been on a 16th Century Ireland reading blitz - "The Twilight Lords" and "The Last Armada" and it's a catchy period.

The photos on this site show buildings that are a lot more primitive.

Thanks for the help, I've already got a couple of scratch built buildings that might work.  Make others shouldn't be too big a problem

As for figures, I've got mostly Foundry Elizabethans for infantry and Old Glory Border Horse (from their Wars of Religion line) for cavalry.  The Irish I got from Sergeant Major Miniatures Elizabethan line together with some Irish Kerns from the Old Glory War of the Roses line.

I am using the Lion Rampant rules and their scenario system.  There are modifications available for Elizabethan troops at:

Another vote for H&A - I got a few, and they're very nice indeed. Oh, and the Warlord ruined house might work as well? Or does it look too modern?
