Thanks guys! And I also think Dragos was cool...but his base just became too annoying. And the idea of rebasing never sounded good. And now I have another painted miniature!

Update - Ettin
As soon as I saw this model I knew I had to get it. I was instantly reminded of Warcraft 2! :D
So much character and such a cool pose. And it would be perfect as a 2-headed Troll. But I liked to add an Ettin to Frostgrave, so I just renamed it. It is a Bones model so some of the detail is a bit soft, but it's good enough and was fun to paint. For the skin I went with the traditional P3 Trollblood recipe:
Basecoat: Trollblood Base
Shade: Sanguine Base
Highlight: Trollblood Highlight.
This triangle of colours work perfectly together for a nice skintone with warm and cool tones and it fits in with the Frostgrave look. For maximum impact, oomph and contrast I went with a classical bright red mohawk. So another creature done to smash the heroes with!

And the creature card:

Thaw of the Lich Lord – Game 7: The Lair of the Ghoul King
Time for an update…much needed! I’ll start with Lair of the Ghoul King. My mate René assembled a HUGE dungeon for this scenario and it all looked awesomesauce. It’s two sets of Teraclips Dungeons combined into a big structure with a total of 3 levels. We placed treasures, rolled for treasures and both of our big warbands entered the cramped dungeon. We were really looking forwards to this game…

The table

Count Dragos and his lackies enter the dungeon

The Elves enter from the other side

Both warbands start by rushing into the hallways. The Elf Captain and his man-crush the Treasure Hunter lead the way with an archer following and the mage leading from the back (typical Elf tactics!)

Dragos led his Knight forwards and quickened his summoned zombie. The rotting corpse quickly shuffled forwards into the far chamber to block off any sneaking ghouls.

Apprentice Lazlo was escorted by the Treasure Hunter, Barbarian and Tunnel Fighter through a dark tunnel.

The Elf Apprentice moved with the Warhound, Skeleton and Knight unto a stairway to quickly grab some treasure…but suddenly a Ghoul appeared near them! The creature simply tore the Warhound apart…first blood…

From the dark came a deep and guttural laughter. The Elfs heard a scrambling sound and suddenly the Ghoul King was amidst their ranks. A clash of titans!

Dragos quickened the Knight and he, the Knight and the Crossbowman entered the large throne room.  They spotted treasures…the Crossbowman fired a bolt at the Ghoul King and managed to inflict some damage.

The Treasure Hunter and Barbarian heard the Ghoul King race for the Elfs so they saw a golden opportunity to claim some treasure. But what was that noise behind them…?

The Elf Captain had a lot of bad luck in the previous struggles in Felstad, so was frustrated like hell. Screaming an old Elf warcry he launched his assault. With his shield he bashed the huge shovel aside and then cleaved the Ghoul King’s skull in twain. The foul creature crashed to the ground. The captain saw glittering gold and quickly grabbed the golden amulet the creature was carrying.
(René rolled a 20 for the Captain! With support and the Blade of Undead Slaying he inflicted a MAHOOSIVE amount of damage).

The Necromancer’s Captain, Assassin and Archer had climbed a stairway and were now heading for treasure. But suddenly a Ghoul came lurching for them. It crashed into the Assassin and caused a grievous wound. The stout hitman was not doing well against the Undead!

The Elf’s were getting bold and the Captain, Treasure Hunter and a Warhound jumped down into the throne room to snatch more treasures. Unfortunately for them, a Ghoul kept them from easily grabbing the potion.

In a corner of the dungeon the Elf thief had sneaked to an unprotected treasure. Seeing an easy opportunity she moved in, but suddenly heard a strange sound behind her. A Ghoul hag! EEK! Fortunately, the Elf Templar quickly joined her to protect her. Something with honour and a damsel in distress. Elfs…
The Ghoul hag charged the Thief, but was countercharged by the Knight who lopped off her head without much trouble.

Lazlo had a big problem as a Ghoul had jumped him from the dark. He screamed for his bodyguards and the three Soldiers quickly returned to help him. This should be easy, right?
Not really…both the Tunnel Fighter and Barbarian were taken out by the Ghoul and the Apprentice had to fight the Ghoul himself! Uh-oh…

Meanwhile Dragos and two Soldiers had stormed the Throne Room to secure the Ghoul King’s treasures. The Crossbowman took a firing position and grabbed a treasure. On the upper balcony the Captain hacked the Ghoul apart and the Assassin quickly jumped on the trapdoor to stop the Ghouls from entering.

Having dispatched the Ghoul, the Captain and the other soldiers crashed into the Elf lines. They expected an easy fight…

Meanwhile The Elfs in the throne room had dispatched the Ghoul and had rushed towards the treasure. It was a real Mexican stand-off!

Back in a corner two Ghouls had taken down the Zombie and Warhound. They were now shuffling through the chamber, looking for a new prey.

Lazlo had destroyed the Ghoul and now was approaching the Throne Room. Dragos moved into cover and raised a new Zombie to help him. The Elf Mage had also moved into the Throne Room and raised a wall of fog in front of the Crossbowman. Both wizards were eyeing each other menacingly.

With a roar, the Treasure Hunter, Zombie and Knight charged into combat. The Elf Warhound was quickly dispatched but the Necromancer’s Treasure Hunter had a hard time against the Elfs. The Knight saw a good opportunity to grab a treasure.

The Elf Templar moved into the Throne Room to help, but was assaulted by Bone Darts, which wounded him. But still he moved in, going for the Knight. The Elf Captain had taken a grievous wound and had moved away to safety. The Elf Treasure Hunter managed to take out his Kossack counterpart and zombie, so now the Elf Treasure Hunter and Templar squared off against the Knight.

On the balcony chaos had ensued. The Assassin and Archer were taken out by the Elfs, while the Elfs lost their Skeleton and Knight. The undead Captain was taken down to 1 wound. Carnage! By then both sides had lost so many Soldiers, that the Wizards called a truce! Yes, no more fighting between both sides as the Wizards agreed to escape the dreaded Ghoul-infested dungeon together.
The Crossbowman had moved towards the exit, but was hounded by the Ghoul. He had almost escaped when the creature jumped him. Being wounded, this could be bad.

Both sides were mangled and carrying treasure, so escaping the dungeon would take some time. Both Dragos and the Knight carried a treasure each. The Elf Captain was still struggling with a summoned Imp, but managed to take out the annoying demon.

The Elf Treasure Hunter grabbed the last treasure and now the exodus began…

Suddenly three Rangifers appeared from a hidden Trapdoor, near the last treasure. They rushed out and sniffed the air for any Undead.

They were far from the warbands, but close to the Ghouls…

Howling furiously they charged into the chamber and swung their weapons at the undead creatures. The Ghouls were taken by surprise and were slaughtered. The three Rangifers approached the tomb with the treasure and bent in prayer. What the…?

As the warbands were nearing the exit, a Ghoul sneaked from a trapdoor and assaulted the Elf Captain. The Elf was near death and had to fight for his life. The fight was epic and with a masterful stroke the Captain impaled the Ghoul on his blade. The magical blade instantly turned the foul creature to dust.

So close…yet so far. Beneath the escaping survivors came the snarling sound of yet another Ghoul! But fortunately Dragos had magically controlled  a Ghoul  and the creature jumped into the threat. The undead snarled and lashed out at each other while the survivors ran and escaped the dungeon.

Aftermath

What a game! What a slaughter! We both ended with three treasures, but since René defeated the Ghoul King and escaped with the amulet, he sure was the winner.
This scenario is lots of fun, but also very deadly with all the Ghouls. In the end my Barbarian, Treasure Hunter, Archer, Assassin, Tunnel Fighter, Warhound and 2 Zombies were taken out. Ouch! Fortunately I didn’t suffer much. The three treasures yielded me cool tomes (Illusionary Soldier and Brew Potion) and I found enough treasure to hire a new soldier: the Demon Hunter! I have Evil Dead’s Ash from Hasslefree Miniatures, so he would be perfect. To simulate the shotgun I gave him a maical crossbow with extra damage.
So once again a great game and my warband ended up with all kinds of cool stuff. My Wizard read both tomes. I managed to create one Illusionary Soldier, brew one potion, raise one zombie and I summoned a new Bear. Things were looking good.

Thaw of the Lich Lord – The Black Cauldron

We are nearing the end of the campaign! Only 3 games left and hopefully Dragos will become a Lich…
For game 8 I had a ton of miniatures to deploy with the Illusionary Soldier, Zombie and the whole warband. We made a cool table with in the centre the ruined tower. As I had filled up the recessed circle in the middle, we thought it would be nice as Cauldron. And size-wise it also seemed good. Treasures were placed, we rolled for deployment and it was time to grab ourselves a new black kettle!

The table setup

The setup:

(left: Lazlo the Apprentice, Zombie, Knight and Illusionary Knight; middle: Bear, Dragos, Tunnel Fighter, Crossbowman and Demon Hunter; right: Captain, Assassin)

Dragos and his warband advanced. The Zombie was magically pushed by Lazlo and ended next to the treasure. It picked it up and shambled back. The Knights moved up…which one was real which was the fake one…?
Dragos, the Demon Hunter and Bear advanced to the centre to take on the Cultists, while the Tunnel Fighter moved under the walkway to get some treasure. The Crossbowman took position on top of the walkway to get the treasure on it and the Captain and Assassin moved towards the treasure on the right next to the small temple.

The Elfs advanced too. The Mage, Templar, Knight and Warhound went through the centre, the Apprentice, Captain, Treasure Hunter, Barbarian and an Archer on my right and the second archer wiith a Thief going for a treasure on my left.
The Thief quickly picked up the treasure…and the ground began to heave and shake. With a roar a mighty worm appeared behind the Elfs. Oh dear, this could be a real problem…

On my right the Elf Apprentice enhanced the Archer’s arrows, while the Captain and Barbarian ran over the shaky walkway. And then the Cultists moved in. The first ran over the walkway and charged the Barbarian. Easy pickings for a Barbarian? Not really, the Cultist gutted the Barbarian and shoved him off the walkway (I rolled a 20…). First blood…an Elf down!

The other Cultists ran out of the ruins to protect their cauldron and slammed into Dragos’ lines. Three stormed the Bear while one went for the Tunnel Fighter. The newly created Zombie shambled forwards…

The big worm slithered into combat with the Elfs and a massive melee ensued. The Templar and Archer tried to kill it, but the creature was faster and wounded both. Only the Elf Mage managed to do some damage and the worm was lightly injured. This could turn out really bad for the Elfs…

In the centre, Ash jumped over a ruin and cut a Cultist in twain with his chainsaw. Groovy, baby. The Bear on the other hand had trouble with a Cultist as it managed to hit the animal. But with the help of the –real- Knight and Dragos they managed to take it out. The Crossbowman managed to head-shot the Zombie. Finally, the Captain and Assassin jumped the last Cultist and took him out in no-time. This gave the Tunnel Fighter the opportunity to get a second treasure and move away.

The Elfs continued to struggle with the worm. The Templar was devoured and the Warhound jumped into combat to lend some support. And the Knight and Mage then combined forces and finally managed to take down the giant beast. What a fight!

Seeing the Elfs were occupied with unexpected trouble, Dragos and his Captain quickly moved for the Temple. It seemed so easy, until the Elf Captain jumped down next to the magical construction.

The fake Knight ran towards the Elf lines to harry them, while Lazlo provided more distractions with summoned Imps. Ash tried to shoot the Captain through the door, but missed. The Crossbowman secured the third treasure.

The Assassin ran towards the temple and secured the fourth treasure. He hoped the Elf Archer would not see him…

The Elf Captain kicked the Cauldron and the big kettle toppled…its foul, boiling contents poured over the Knight who was severely scalded and screamed in agony. The Knight was left wounded and the Elf smirked arrogantly.
Not long though…Lazlo hopped to the door and blasted the Captain with a Bone Dart which took the arrogant Elf out. Ha! Take that, facncypants!
Ash, the Captain, Drago and a freshly raised Zombie secured the centre and waited for any Elfs who dared to take their prize.

A Warhound jumped in and Dragos grinned. But as he and Ash tried to kill it, they were bit and pushed aside. What demon hound was this?

The Assassin watched for the Archer and saw how Ash levelled his shotgun and blasted the Elf away. The Kossack smiled and quickly gulped down a potion of Teleportation. A second later and he was on the safe side of the action with one more secured treasure.

The Captain joined the fray and smashed his huge Club of Battering into the hound. Bones crunched and the Elfs heard one last yelp and knew the Warhound was down.
But the Elf Mage had one last trick up his sleeve: the Knight. But before it could charge in and spoil Dragos’ plans, the Necromancer flung a Bone Dart which took the Elf down.
The Elfs knew they wouldn’t win this one and backed off…

Aftermath

That was a weird game! It went fast, was very bloody for the Elfs and my warband was very successful. Not only did my warband claim 4 treasures, they also dragged the Cauldron back to the hide-out. René had some bad luck with the Worm appearing behind his lines and my dice sometimes were on fire.
I found lots of stuff after the game…but sold just about everything. This gave me enough money to buy magical weapons for a lot of Soldiers, helping out against the Banshees in the next game…

Two more games to go!

Great report - bravo!
I too have felt the pain of having a worm appear directly behind my wizard - my sympathies to the elves.

Both of those reports are excellent - thank-you for writing them up!

The Ghoul dungeon is especially fun - fabulous work on the terrain. I'm still exploring dungeon possibilities for my table.
