Republican Roman project update 7
« on: August 14, 2015, 10:52:04 AM »
Seventh update to my Rep. Roman project.

Here is the second Triarii unit [century?] composed of 28mm scale minis from 1st Corp.
There wasn't much scope for making changes to the poses and I wished I'd removed their spear hands, fixed the spear to the stump and re-worked a hand around the spear shaft.

I went for two approaches with the shields, the first with Mig mud and the second with dark streaks...all in all I'll probably re-work the dark streaks with a little Mig mud.

A group shot:

Thank you for looking and suggestions for new units welcome.

I'm now working on the Hastati...

I'd appreciate hearing any thoughts about the general appearance of 'Penal' troops.

I gather they either have enemy armour/weapons or no armour/helmet and only a weapon...?

Stuart

Mr Google can help - just ask him about 'Roman penal legionaries'!

Helmet, simple tunic, Gallic shield and simple spear.

Cruasader, Agema and Foundry make them.   Similarly an unarmoured Victrix legionary or Velite with Gallic shields.   Another option would be to use helmeted Aventine velites (without wolf's pelt) and Gallic type shield.   Rather than pila I would suggest a simple stabbing spear.  Unarmoured hastati with a different shield would also work.   Relic Miniatures would also have suitable figures.

Thank you for the suggestions Mithridates, much appreciated. 8)

Yes, I've done some research, but I wasn't entirely satisfied with what I read.
Are penal troops are unwilling troops, willing to earn back their dignity, armed and armoured to the teeth, (with non Roman weapons), as they'll be placed in the thick of battle, or no armour and only one weapon because they are expected to die?

I'll figure something out eventually.   :)

Stuart.

Go-on, kick a man when he's down. ;D

James, I'm painting the wood grains four minis at a time, or it starts to become too much of a chore!

Stuart.  :)
