Diner?
« on: November 03, 2008, 12:47:25 PM »
Does anyone make one of those classic American diners made out of an old train wagon? As a model, I mean... (28 mm)?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I don't know about the wagon, but Ainsty/Old Crow make a diner set with a counter and booths and tables and stuff.

If you can't find something suitable you could maybe hollow out a toy train and stick some inside?

Its in the Vacant Lot range near the bottom of the page.

Ainsty's model is very nice [I just have seen it] but a little modern for Pulp.

For interiors with a feel see the card paper models, like this one:

The Plasticville one is nice, but there is not much room inside for detailing the interior. One of our players glued a photo of the counter and working area to one wall to allow some room for moving figures.

Of course the real things tend to be rather narrow too.

Nice, nice, nice!!!  8)

The Ainsty set makes me think 'A History of Violence' (with my favourite halfdane actor) right away  :D

I think the wheels most often are removed, when they convert those wagons - wouldn't be so nice to come to work and find that someone dragged the diner away during the night  ;)  - not to mention the mayhem it would cause when the Wall Street guys can't get their shot of cafeine  lol

Actually the vast majority of diners were purpose-built, not converted rail cars. There were quite a few companies that made and shipped out diners across the country. Here's a good link for more info:

Buy a card tram kit in  0 gauge from someone like Freestone in UK - they are only a few £ - have the roof removeable and put in your diner furniture.  They don't have a website but info on thrm is available here: http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/shops/472-Freestone_Model_Accessories

They have a wide selection of Alphagraphix kits for example .  Terry Russell also does UK tram kits

I'm also sure that there are downloadable European and US tram kits available on the Net for free - just search around and I'm sure you will find them.  If not the right scale just blow them up.

Lots of good ideas here, thanks!

I actually got the idea because I saw that Cold War have all thier zombies available again - and one set is labelled 'The Deserted Diner'  :D

But I think a diner is just the place for the rugged PI to take the soiled dove (to) after rescueing her from those oriental not-so-gentlemen.....  ;)

PI's dont have anything to do with soiled doves, thats strictly victorian era USA. Not all diners are the long narrow type. You could have a diner which is the more conventional restaurant. Probably not what you want, though. It's really the standard american food that makes the diner, and a lot of stainless steel furnishings to clean easily before the health department shows up. ;)

I am confused.... ???

Are you looking for an exterior model, or interior?

Or an exterior with interior?

Well, I could have called her a moll, or a dame, I guess....  ;)

Actually, the best solution would be an exterior with interior. Largest gaming potential. But an exterior model would be my second choice.

Interiors only would be a supplement to an exterior model (how to get inside).
