Painting my warband (09.18 updated)
« on: August 29, 2015, 04:47:38 PM »
Hi,

I start painting the warband for Frostgrave and preparing the small band for the first game, 500gc band.

Starting with some plastic soldiers..

Still these models need to do more basing work, such as snowing.. I am considering that work after painting all models in the band.

Next is to paint some lead models.. Cheers!  ;)

Looking great. I never cease to be amazed at how much better other people's painting skills are than my own!

Those look great. Lots of variety in the palette, while still being earthy and dark agey.

Really excellent, and I really like the style.

What were the steps you used to paint the faces and the basic cloth (base coat, number of highlights, washes, etc.)?

Thanks for your comments, guys! So glad you enjoyed my models. I will update more figs soon!

Really excellent, and I really like the style.

What were the steps you used to paint the faces and the basic cloth (base coat, number of highlights, washes, etc.)?

I use different techniques for flesh and clothes.
Here are; (VMC: Vallejo Model Color, VPA: Vallejo Panzer Ace)

Flesh:

Basecoat with VMC Flat Brown -> This is for facial recesses, such as eyes, etc.
Deep Shadow: VPA Shadow Flesh 60% VPA Flesh Base 40% (Recesses)
Light Shadow: VPA Shadow Flesh 40% VPA Flesh Base 60%
Middle Tone: VPA Shadow Flesh 20% VPA Flesh Base 80% (Start using Zenithal highlighting)
Base Tone: VPA Flesh Base
Light highlight: VPA Flesh Base 80% VPA Flesh Highlight 20% (Thin line mostly)
Final highlight: VPA Flesh Base 40% VPA Flesh Highlight 60% (Extreme Edge)

From the middle tone I don't paint where the light don't hit, in other words, not visible from the top view.

Clothes

Light Shadow as Basecoat: Mix base color 40% with shadow color 60%.
Deep Shadow: Paint shadow color at recesses and darkest area with diluted paint.
Layer 1: Base color 60% Shadow color 40% (With Zenithal highlighting)
Layer 2: Base color 80% Shadow color 20%
Layer 3: Base color 100%
Highlight: Base color 80% VMC Sunny Skin Tone 20% (Edge or spot depends on the material)

Hope it is helpful for you!  :)

There are really good dude, I hope I can achieve the same look.

I'm going to try and use a bit of cheeky airbrush work myself.
