Spaceship basing - clear or black?
« on: September 02, 2015, 02:21:21 AM »
I was digging through my piles of forgotten projects, and stumbled upon my Zandris IV ships. They had originally been shelved because I couldn't find a storage/stand solution I was happy with.

I've found the below stands from Back-2-Basix here in Australia, and they're exactly what I'm after. I can buy enough stands for any fleet I'll need to run, and then buy extra magnets so that I can magnetise all my ships to use the same stands.

Problem is, I can't decide whether to go with clear stands, or black. So I figured I'd put the vote out to you friendly folks. Should I go with clear, or black stands? If anyone has photos of their own miniatures with a similar basing scheme, feel free to post your photos :)

Most of the time I go with bases marked up for my fav particular game system.

However, I tend to prefer black to clear.  You'd think the mono-tone would be more visually disruptive, but I think clear actually is more noticeable, or, at least, jarring.

Other, other hand (look ma, the three-handed gamer!) the upright 'post' should definitely be clear, imnsho...

I personally think flat black is the way to go with both.  It doesn't distract you much at all.  Most clear bases/stalks tend to catch the light, appear white or glossy, and cloud up with glue.  I don't recall many flying bases which I thought looked good.

Either on is fine, though I prefer black or a dark indigo blue.

Damn, these are both good points and making me lean towards black.

Thanks for the input mate. I've been in touch with the supplier, and they've said they're happy to provide clear stands and black bases. Although thanks to Elbow, I'm starting to think how the glue and magnets will look through the clear acrylic...

Black would look better methinks for the darkness of space.

I'd go with black bases.  I'm very happy with mine and I did try the clear first.

Here's a LINK to an example of my stuff.

I'd already had a gander at this project, great work bud!

I've decided to go with the black. I've purchased enough stands for 8 large capital ships, 16 medium capital ships, and 32 small ships. Plus enough magnets to mount another 100 ships. Now I just need to work out how to base my fighters... I'm thinking brass rod glued to the top of a magnet and stuck on a normal stand. Looking forward to experimenting!

Thanks for the input all :)
