6mm or 10mm - Punic Wars?
« on: September 17, 2015, 11:10:21 PM »
Hello All,

I am considering doing Punic Wars and was seeing if anyone had any thoughts on scale and basing. I am usually a 28mm player, but I am wanting to go smaller for the first time. Any helpful thoughts or ideas? Any companies that you absolutely recommend. I am currently liking Pendraken and Baccus, because they have some army deals that are good.

I'm a big fan of 10mm, and of Pendraken.

10mm figures are big enough that you can see the detail on the figures, but still put together big units quickly and cheaply.

To me 6mm figures are a bit too small (although I quite like 6mm tanks).

In either scale big bases look good - you can then arrange the figures in to units, with skirmishers out in front, or officers at the back - generally a bit more than just straight ranks of figures.

Have a look on the Pendraken forum for lots of inspiration.

Depending on the rules you are considering using try having a look at Rapier Miniatures in 6mm. Good deals for the Punic Wars there too.

Best advice is probably to get some samples beforehand. Coincidentally, I ordered a random selection of the ranges I wanted to take a look at from both Baccus and Pendraken. No problem at all. Both great companies to deal with.

Having painted those samples, my personal sweet spot would be 10mm. Like Fred I'm intrigued by the detail you get while the models are still of fairly(!) realistic proportion. Personal preference, though. I truly admire the wonders others have done in various scales, and I've tried my hand at a good number of ranges – but if painting doesn't feel comfortable, I prefer not to enforce it. So, better see for yourself what you can manage without missing the fun.

That said, if you haven't painted anything smaller than 28mm figures, you should find little issues switching to 15mm. There's a new and quite comprehensive range for the 'Punic Wars era' on the market, done by Andy Cooper of Westwind Production/Forged in Battle (LINK). Perhaps a third option?

I would also go for 10mm. Cheap, but very good detail.

6mm is not cheaper enough compared to 10mm (in my opinion) to justify this choice, except maybe for modern armoured regiment (or bigger) combat.

6mm for me. There is a good range and lots of scenery for 6mm. 10mm seems a bit to close to 15mm IMHO and you might end up trying to paint them like 15mm. Whilst not Punic wars here is some 6mm late Romans by Baccus

If you are looking at starting the Punic Wars in 6mm have a look at this blog:

Not only does it feature excellent battle reports, but also some very nice terrain. I think this might be one of the main advantages: You can actually use the horse effectively on the table and terrian etc. becomes more important.

I do this period in 15mm and have large armies for all the main protagonists.

To do it in a smaller scale, I would definitely choose 10mm Pendraken.  They minis are great and paint up very nicely.  I use 10mm for my League of Augsburg but use FOG R basing sizes, ie 40mm frontage.  You can fit a lot of figures on each base, my shot troops are based in 10s on a 40x20mm base.  the mass effect is wonderful!

Good luck
