Citadel Paints- Scorched Brown and Dark Flesh Equivalents?
« on: September 15, 2015, 12:29:01 PM »
Hi,

I'm running very short of both Scorched Brown and Dark Flash which I often use to highlight up leather on Medieval models and I was wondering if GW/Citadel still do an equivalent in both paints? Or an approximation?

Darrell.

Apparently Doom bull brown (dark fleah) and Rhinox hide (scorched brown) are the modern equivalents. Dark fleshtone and charred brown are the Vallejo game colour versions.

Thanks. I'll put in an order soon. (Not from GW!)

Here be a chart

Unfortunately I cannot enlarge the chart for some reason(???)

I think there is a pdf on the GW site you can download.

Be aware, that charred brown is not very much like Scorched Earth Brown at all. My bottle at least, is more like model colour German camo black brown.

There was recently another thread on this very subject, I'm on my mobile at the mo, so cant easily link to it but it is either in the workbench section, or general discussion about a week or so ago, if that helps 😊

I always take the old one to compare if necessary.

Thanks guys.... I'll take a peek on the GW site and see if there is still a comparison chart.

Yes, I asked this exact same question regarding the elusive Scorched Brown here!
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=82065.0

So to update on that, I can tell you that Vallejo Game Color Charred Brown and Vallejo Model Color Chocolate Brown... ARE NOT the same as Scorched Brown, they are both very different colours.

What makes Scorched Brown unique is the nice red hue it has, and I use it for flesh and off-white colours, starting with brown and blending up through flesh and bone to pure flesh and bone highlights. The blended stages have that nice red hue. I tried Charred Brown, and it has no red element, when mixed with flesh it turns a more grey colour. Chocolate Brown is actually quite a light colour, and like no chocolate I have ever eaten.

I haven't yet tried Citadel Rhinox Hide, so I'd be interested to hear how it compares if you do go for it.

However I decided Vallejo Charred Brown is still a very nice brown, just darker and less red. So what I'm trying now is using that as my base coat, and using another reddish brown to mix with flesh for the highlights. To that end I went for Vallejo Game Color Dark Fleshtone, which is supposed to be equivalent to Citadel Dark Flesh, and I believe it is. Though I don't have much experience with Dark Flesh, I do have a (dried out) pot of it, and the Vallejo equivalent seems pretty much spot on. And it blends with flesh in the same reddish way the Scorched Brown does.

I now have a large selection of browns, some which I won't be using much, but with Dark Fleshtone and Charred Brown I can still do all the things I used to. I still haven't found a replacement for Scorched Brown, though Rhinox Hide still might be the one, which I might give a go when my pot finally gets emptied.

Thanks for all the comment guys  8).

Clearly the easiest thing for me to do is to reach out to my Vallejo Model Colour shelf and pick out the nearest matches :)

Appreciated chaps :)

As I posted at the end of Charlie's thread, it looks like Vallejo Military Colours Flat Brown might be a good candidate too (as it seems to have that nice reddish touch to it). :)

Thanks.

If not I'm sure that I can add a tinge of red.
