scratch built tramp steamer
« on: September 21, 2015, 02:19:40 AM »
Hi all...it's me again with another project.
I figured a cargo ship of some kind was needed for my 28mm submarine to go after, but still needed to be compact enough for a game board/table and big enough for a bit of play.
This tramp is of a generic but classic look(S.S. Venturesque).....
The materials are of the normal items I use...i.e. cardboard, foam core, plastic bitz, crafting wood, washers and grommets of various sizes, puff paint for rivets, watch parts, wire for the door handles and such.....

I still have a lot of minor details to get to like the steam pipes for the cargo winch and anchor windlass...some cables and a hook for the cargo boom...a spot light over the wheelhouse, and a life boat for the stack level, or i may just hang it from the stern via davits...I also intend to make beds and dressers for the staterooms, the chart table and ship's wheel for the wheel house...the crews quarters will be furnished with beds and lockers...and a kitchen/mess...also there will be a fuel oil fired scotch styled boiler and triple expansion engine along with fuel tanks in the engine room.

Let me know your thoughts as I will accept ALL criticisms and ideas.
Thanks and cheers!!,
Carl

Wowee zowee super keen!

Really nice set-up. I love all the playable areas! Nice weathering and detailing too with the rust and all those RIVETS!

;) That's fantastic!  Like the rivets, too.  What is puff paint?

hey guys...thank you for the comments!!
General,....this is puff paint...

It is used to create 3D art on fabric weather it be a picture or words...it comes in many different colors.
When it dries it becomes a rubbery solid and is paintable.
The applicator is very small and affords quite good control when you squeeze the bottle.
It can be found in any craft store and the craft dept. of wal*mart.
Cheers, Carl

Argonor,
Thank you for your comment.
It just takes time and patience...i have never done a steamship before, but I had to try...and sure I goofed up a few times...ya just learn from the mistakes is all.
I have lurked on sites like Lead Adventures Forum for years picking up ideas and techniques from a great bunch of folks who were good enough to share their experiences
before i tried my first castle. I do a lot of research on a project before I start a build to get an idea and feel for how others do their miniatures.
You can do ANYTHING you put your mind to.
Cheers,
Carl

That is excellent! I only had made the passenger/crew to cargo compartment ratio in favour of the cargo bay, but this is no criticism. Very well done - a true beauty!
