Bits and Bobs for an Old West Town
« on: October 04, 2015, 12:19:49 AM »
Gentlemen, I once more need pointers.

I have begun constructing my mdf town, and I really need a lot of stuff to get it 'right', so if some of you could direct me to the appropriate Trading posts, I'd be much obliged!

Crates, barrels, watering troughs, piles of firewood and/or timber, all that kind of 'scatter' to make the town look 'lived in' - where should I look, please? I guess that much stuff made

Home Furniture:
Beds, stoves (for firewood), tables, chairs for private living quarters - WHO makes 'em, please?

Store furniture:
Desks, counters, shelves (and goods), long table/benches for the grub tent/dinner café, bar/saloon counters, saloon/gambling tables and matching chairs, etc. - you know the drill by now?

And the $10.000 question:
How do I make convincing tumbleweeds, please?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I can only help with the last question but I actually think lichen - suitably colored (and easy to get where I'm at in right hue) works very well as tumble weed.  You just have to select carefully.  And I see tumble weed almost every day around here.

By the way, interesting factoid, tumble weed is not native to the American west, it is an invasive species.

There is another kind of moss that might work but harder to make look good - name escapes me at the moment.

And, now that I think upon it, you can do both the green and growing tumble weed and the dried up weed with lichen.  Just think tumble weeds turned upside down and green.

4Ground make a large variety of H?MDF furniture kits.

Tumbleweed? How about rubberised horsehair?

I used it on my Terrain Below inspired by some pieces made by Dr DeAth.

I second all of the above.

Frontline has some great stuff for interiors, but check out Ainsty too, as they have loads of stuff for cluttering your streets.
Boot Hill has some great produce and a brilliant wagon (which I have yet to get around to and I have had it for almost a tear now.... ::)).

Crates, barrels etc, look no further than the Bazaar for some lovely new crates etc from Blackstone:

I also use the rubberised horsehair idea, stolen from Dr. D.

Thanks, all!

Now, where do I get rubberised horse hair? What kind of store carries it?

As it is an animal product, I may have to either find it here in Denmark, or see if I can procure some in London next week.

Ebay is your best bet.

I have some left over from my project. If you make it to BLAM I could hand it over to you. ;)

You're such a flirt  lol

I'll see what I can do, cannot promise to be able to squeeze it in, but my eldest daughter was actually quite positive about it when I mentioned you were going to meet up on the very same weekend we start our stay in London. Well, I've got the address now, and maybe if we can combine it with a visit to Hampton Court...

He is indeed.
Just be careful exactly whet you are signing up for when you take away any of his 'hair'...!

I've had some really good bits from 4ground in MDF and I too second the above suggestions. To maybe save some shipping Great Escape Games stock the 4Ground and Frontline plus some of their own bits all dedicated to the Dead Man's Hand range and of course the excellent buildings.
Hope thats some help
Cheers John

For furniture, you could try the Petite Properties range of 1/48 scale furniture.

Many useable pieces, there, thanks, but what an annoying way to display goods in a webstore...

I suggest to give your local art supplies shop a visit.
I use air-drying clay to form grain sacks and 'wooden-pearls' for pots. It is very easy and a cheap way to get you tons of vases, pots, sacks or even fruits and vegetables (which you could mold with that clay).

I found packs of eight hay bales at Michaels (US art/craft supply store) this weekend for less than $2 a pack after discounts and coupons.  They're too big for standard sized figs, but cut in half with a coping saw and they work pretty well.
