Equipment for soldiers, a question.

Just a little question. More of a wysiwyg type and a modeling one. Can your soldiers be given optional weapons from your stores. As an example say I want my thief to carry a bow or an additional hand weapon. He would now have a ranged attack with no bonus and no empty slot. Is this acceptable and/or allowed. Surely if it were an enchanted bow. This is just an example and again using what you have from lost companions gear. Also if given a non magic sword would he get the bonus for the two weapon combat. Soldiers can only carry the types of weapons they start with, so a thief can only carry a dagger OR a magic dagger, they can't take any other type of weaponry.
