Fiddling with spells...
« on: October 14, 2015, 04:39:09 PM »
Hi guys,

I had a thought about how to spells in Frostgrave, or more accurately, how to make it more worthwhile to cast a variety of spells. This came about because we played a game where a necromancer basically cast bone dart over and over again. The player's comment was 'I get XP for casting spells and and XP for killing things - bone dart is a double win!'. True, but a bit boring. It would be fun if the players tried casting more of their spells... So I thought of this:

1) XP - only awarded the first time a spell is cast. Repeat casts don't grant XP.
2) Difficulty - every time a spell is cast, the difficulty goes up by one (the caster is becoming drained...).

This naturally makes it harder to use the same spell over and over. I think this would reduce the total XP payout, but in doing so would encourage the use of more spells from the caster's selection. Also, total book-keeping is the same - you aren't recording more and more XPs, but now how many times a spell is cast.

Thoughts?

We have had wizs in our game who go around crumbling everything they can, just for the xp.

And I, I confess, did once teleport 3 inches, when I could have just walked it.

Just don't give the wizards XP for killing. It's vulgar. They should develop their magical skills, not their lethality.

It's different for soldiers. For them killing is a ... physical skill. Brrrr.

Well, I guess that technique only pays off if you either have reduced casting values substantially, or roll that D20 a lot better than I do.

I only ever attempt to cast if the spell effect is useful at the time, as I otherwise run out of health from failed casting attempts very quickly. Especially annoying when casting (or attempting to cast) the Heal spell!  >:(
