Thaumaturge Warband (Man-at-Arms - Quickshade Soft Tone)
« on: October 26, 2015, 03:36:59 AM »
I love D&D Clerics and divine healing magic, so a Thaumaturge warband was the obvious choice.  According to the Frostgrave rulebook, "Thaumaturges draw their magic powers from positive energy.  Most, though not all, believe this energy comes from some form of deity."  The official background allows for the player's own imagination, but my Thaumaturge warband will be religious in nature.  Keeping with the Cleric theme, I will favor crossbows over bows (3rd edition D&D allowed Clerics to use crossbows), and Knights and Templars over the other specialist soldiers.  In addition, my warband will have a coherent color scheme, as it would be logical that the Thaumaturge would be able to find willing support amongst the faithful as opposed to relying solely on mercenaries.

I have decided to keep the white and gray color scheme of the official Thaumaturge, but have decided to use yellow for gloves, boots, belts, etc.  The sun is a common symbol for Thaumaturges according to Frostgrave lore, so including yellow into the color scheme seemed appropriate.  I've played other games, such as Warhammer, but would like to give honor to Frostgrave and stick to its setting, despite not being fleshed-out too much.

Anyway, I don't have a lot of hobby time these days and am a slow modeler and painter, so I hope this thread will help motivate me to keep up on my progression.

I have ten Frostgrave Soldiers that I'm working on, but here is a WIP of a Man-at-Arms.  This miniature is about two-thirds complete; I still need to finish the right glove, boots, belt, sword, helm, and shield, but it gives the idea of the aesthetic I'm aiming for.

Nice colour scheme and a good theme for the warband. I look forward to seeing your progress. Thanks for sharing

Very nice brushwork and the color scheme really works well.  Can't wait to see the finished model.

Thank you for the positive feedback.  Hopefully I'll get some time to paint so that I can start posting more photos.

Love the color scheme. And the concept. I will be doing a home brew version of the cleric(D&D) for my convention Frostgrave game.

I currently have the official thaumaturge (unpainted - save the best for last), but am thinking of kit-bashing a cleric using the soldier and cultist kits.  I'll have to take a closer look at the cultists, but if any of the bodies are "clean" and un-tattered, I could use that as a base, with the cultist double-handed mace, and the hooded head from the soldier kit.  Now, if only he could have armor too...

Since I don't get a lot of hobby time, and am a slow painter as it is, I have decided that I'll use the dip method instead.  Below is a test model I have completed, although I'm wondering whether I should use a lighter gray, or perhaps reversing the white and gray

It took a lot of searching, but I managed to find and order a sun-shaped craft punch (the difficulty was finding one with an appropriate size), which I used on a piece of thin styrene and glued it to the man-at-arm's shield.  This is the symbol I will use for the other soldiers' shields.

Using a craft punch to make shield icons is brilliant.

Dip method works wonders. I use it too, sort of. The punch shield icins is a brilliant move!!

Wow, that sunburst symbol is excellent! I had no idea craft punches like that exist. Where did you order it from?

The dip method also seems to have worked out surprisingly well on that last soldier.

This is where I (finally!) found the sun symbol.  I would have thought that finding a generic sun would have been easy, but it wasn't, at least at the size I needed:

I have painted a second test model, with a lighter shade of gray and using black dip.  The problem is that the lighter gray would show the brown more; on the other hand, the yellow gloves, boots, etc., won't be quite as rich.  I'll try to post it later tonight after I give it some anti-shine.

I agree with the other posters, that sunburst punch was a brilliant idea!  I don't always like the way dip figures turn out, but yours looks really nice!  Did you actually "dip" it in the can, or did you brush it on?  From what I've seen, the second method seems to generally give better results but whatever you are doing is certainly working.   ;)
