$25 Frostgrave Terrain Challenge
« on: October 27, 2015, 08:42:03 PM »
Over on the Reaper forums, a couple of us decided to attempt to fill a 3'x3' terrain board for Frostgrave, and limiting ourselves to only spending $25. Included in this challenge is creating all the terrain needed for all of the scenarios

I'm already going on the challenge, and documenting it on my blog. The first post, listing the rules of the challenge went up today.

And this is the first piece I finished building.

Cool! I've spent well over that but I've bought my supplies in bulk, so they'll end up making far more than just FG terrain.  :D

That is an interesting challenge, particularly as terrain is the big thing I have to do for my Frostgrave project.

That's tough...depending on the quality you want to have.  Cardboard and spray paint you could do it easily.  lol

Sure, but I want it to look decent, if not good.

Well here is just a hint at what I have done with some very old foamcore cast offs, cardboard out of the dumpster and baking soda. I "found" some coffee stirrers in a coffee shop and I actually broke down and bought a box of wooden matches at Walmart. If you include Aileens Tacky glue (bought but have over half the bottle left) and some grey and brown craft paints (5$ max) way under 25$!
The world is changing so fast and we,re just trying to catch up...

Really impressive stuff.  At $25 I think it would be possible to fill a 3'x3' and have a good looking result but....those scenarios.  That's a lot of specialized terrain pieces added to the mix.  Best of luck and I'll watch the thread eagerly but you all really have your work cut out out for you.

Well the challenge was under 25$ so lets say the statue scenario. Simple wooden shapes. Heck old pill bottles from the trash spray painted up!
Treasure tokens are simple with a cut out cardboard disc sprinkle glitter. The big tower I have already showed in my previous posting. Stone huts for the Haunted mansion Juice Box painted grey. Well scenario is the easiest.Double thick Cardboard (are yall sensing a theme here?Cut out the circle in the center. Glue it to another sheet of cardboard painted blue. The columns couldn't be easier. Used toilet paper rolls. The only real issue with the cost is the minis and if you used paper minis even that is mitigated.

I've been getting old cinder blocks and smashing them into chunks with a
hammer and using them as scatter terrain/corner ruins. You can fill a board really easily and it doesn't actually look to bad!

Large rocks and dry sticks used as perished tree trunks can work aswell and cost you nothing to gather up.

(i've just been splitting some marble for carving and i have some nice beautiful chunks i might use as scatter for frostgrave.)

I haven't tried the cinder block trick yet but I may once I run out of foamcore. I got a trunk full of the stuff from a highschool science fair. I guess they had lots of display boards there that weekend. Lolol

Great challenged, I have written a tutorial on making cheap stone statues which you can find on my blog here

All you actually need are some miniatures, pieces of cork or wood and some wooden bases. Let me know what you think of them.

Great article! I was looking for a way to build some pedestals for the six statues for the scenario. I have the models for the statues already, so this is going to work out just fine.

Great idea.

I've been trying the same thing on my Blog. Building Frostgrave Themed Terrain from bits I had in the shed/bits box.
