Texas Longhorn?
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:39:50 AM »
Need some. 28 mm scale.

Does anyone know where to get those, please?

While I'm at it - I'm sure someone pointed me to some buffalos in the past, but I've only recently begun to record all finds in a spreadsheet  :-I.

I think Mega Minis do a couple, but others?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Foundry used to do them but dont now? Vendel have some cattle which would work fine.

On buffalo Stronghold have them but they are small and a bit old school. Old Glory definately sell them and so do Hlbs and/or Dazed miniatures

Dixon Miniatures do some very nice Longhorns, two different poses and I think they also do Bison/buffalo.

Scroll down and look under accessories:

You want Herefords, not those showy Longhorns.

Why does nobody make Herefords? Best cattle in the world, and about as common as Longhorns (if not more so) in Westerns.  ;)

Herfords and many other common breeds more common in the East didn't become popular in the west until the end of the 19th century when ranchers began to move away from open range. They were seen as not handling weather as well as the longhorns, especially after the winter of 1886.

By the time Westerns were being made the West had hardier stock and had adapted ranching practices so Herfords and Angus were favored as being the better value.

But as to manufacturers, Longhorn are simply more iconic.

Nice to see a pic of the Dixon ones  :)

I shall be buying a small herd this winter for my Gutshot! players to fight over  ;)

Might buy from various manufacturers to have some variation.

Ertl Longhorn Round-Up Box Set...come with 36 pieces. It includes 15 long horns, a Chuck wagon which is about right for 28mm (I compared the wheels to metal and they are exactly the same size and then cut it back to the hitches), 2 mounted cowboys and horses ( I gave the cowboys to my son to use with his tractors, but the horses are perfect size for using as tethered horses at the hitching posts, and 16 pieces of fence that if you paint and dry brush up look great. I did 2 boxed sets, including re-painting the longhorns and then basing them and they look great. If you watch eBay, go into some TSC stores or older Home Hardware type shops, you can get them for  $8 - 10 dollars or on-line or through eBay, which is how I got mine. I also recently picked up a Ertl Country Ranch set which has 8 longhorn, a windmill, some old horse drawn farm equipment, fence and a nice barn for $30 Cdn. A great deal with lots of other little items that can be used as well. Good luck!!

Here's a "painting guide" for you:

Argonor I was brousing the Dixon miniatures yesterday at Warfare and saw the Bison/Buffalo. They are very nice. :) (I already have the Longhorn cattle and can vouch for them.)

Nice!

I might look around a bit for the Ertl-sets, too.

Imagine a herd of 50+ longhorns stampeeding through a town  :D ;D

Thanks, everyone! All this was just the input I needed. And I imagine that I can paint one animal in one evening (my speed-painting is coming along - nearly painted a LotR Gondor horse yesterday evening - had it been a horse with no harness, I'd have finished it!!  :o  ).

Now, back to work  :`
