Thanks for the comments! I had a couple of requests for a toad painting guide so took some WIP photos when painting the Boss Toad in fire toad colours. Here's a quick step-by-step guide.
Paints used for the skin are Vallejo Bloody Red, Hot Orange, Orange Fire and Elf Skintone for the skin.
Step One. Base the model and prime using a good aerosol primer. Then give it an even basecoat of Bloody Red.
Step Two. Once this has dried wash the whole model with a mix of black/sepia ink or paint, or use something like Army Painter Dark Tone. Once this is dry give the whole model a drybrush with Bloody Red. This will give the skin depth, shade areas like the mouth and eyes, and bring out some of the bumpy texture of the skin. (Tip: Paint the warty back area of the toad pure Bloody Red. This will give the best contrast when the warts are painted dark.)
Step Three. Start to drybrush the underside of the toad in the lighter shades. Layer the colours by starting with a 50/50 mix of Bloody Red/Hot Orange, then pure Hot Orange, followed with 50/50 Hot Orange/Orange Fire. Continue like this until you're left with pure Elf Skintone. As the mixes get lighter start to paint only areas like the feet and throat/lips. The lightest colour Elf Skintone would be used on the lips and and of the ends of the toes only.
Step Four. Paint the teeth then work on the eyes. Paint the eyeball Plague Brown and paint an interesting pupil shape in black. Add a small amount of white to the Plague Brown and paint random dots around the eye. Paint progressively lighter dots concentrating on the edge of the pupil. The end result is a toad like eye.
Final Stage. Pick out the warts with a mix of Gory Red/Royal Purple followed by Royal Purple and then some dots of Royal Purple/Black on the top of the warts. Finish off the base then varnish!
Thanks for looking!
