HORSA!SAXON AND GRIPPING B COMPARISON Page 2 & 3
« on: November 10, 2015, 12:21:16 PM »
As an aside to my Hastings and (emergency) Lion Rampant forces I've been painting the odd old Gripping Best 'Arthurian' mini to slowly build up a small force that can be used for Lion Rampant, Dux Britaniarum or Saga.

I really adore these old Patten sculpts from Gripping Beast- they have been among my favourite miniatures for years, as long as I can remember in terms of wargaming. They are very evocative of the Sub Roman period in our history and let's face it, they're about the best one can buy.

A few more pics can be seen on my Just Add Water Blog including a group shot of Hengist, Horsa and Merlin standing side by side here:

Darrell.

He looks absolute great  :-*

Have you seen Collin's own miniatures website: http://saxonminiatures.com/

If you like the Gripping Beast ones have a look at his own Saxon's or Arthurian's. You  will love them. I bought the Warlord packs of both and they are brilliant.

Kind regards

Sascha

Great figure Darrell. and perfect painting  :)

Like I always say, to my eyes at any rate, the old original Patten Gripping Beast ranges are so, so much better than Gripping Beast 2.0... Not as animated, but so much more evocative and realistic.

Sascha, I do keep looking at those new Saxon Miniatures Arthurians... So very tempting... But the lead mountain, the lead mountain...  :?

Beautifully painted Darrell!
Can't help thinking what masterpieces you would be able to produce with the new Saxon Miniatures.
Not having Richards' steel resolve I bought Colin's Arthurian miniatures and never regretted it for a moment.
But then again my lead mountain is probably a mole hill compared to his... lol

Just took a look at the Saxon Miniatures website. I didn't know he had released a range of Saxon Huscarls, feeling very tempted!

Thanks chaps  :)

Sascha, Captain, Willie B and Cram, Ive got the Huscarls that  SAxon Miniatures do and have included them in the Hastings project. Talking of which here will be some updated pics as soon as i get around to basing the painted mini's- I left them to block base and sort of can't face it  lol

I'm very, very tempted by the Saxon Mini's Arthurians (as well as the rest of the ranges) and agree about the old style sculpts- they just have so much character and are at least to me eyes, more evocative of the Early Medieval setting.

Darrell.

Very pensive looking fella - a calm before the storm pose. Nicely painted, especially that shield.

Thanks Little Odo- very much down to the sculpt- you can't beat the old GB sculpts for the Sub Roman era and a real a sense of character in the sculpt.

All I've said above is exemplified in the pic below of the GB Hengist, Horsa and Merlin:

Cheers,
Darrell.
