Cheers Darrell. Yeah, I used a couple of LBM transfers for more complicated designs but generally paint the simpler ones, it is much easier and to be honest I doubt they were so perfect in real life.

I'm pretty convinced of it unless you had a lot of ready cash. a warrior (according to Mike Loades and the tradition of the Holmgang, a warrior was allowed three shields as it was expected that they would mostly (or all!) fail during combat. Why pay for expensive designs and paint on a shield that will be knackered in no time? OK, for the Upper echilons of the Clergy, Eorldermen, Kngs etc but ordinary warriors? Perhaps not.

That said, a Knight (Miles, Latin origin of the word mail too) was not an ordinary warrior, nor a Huscarl.

Darrell.

@Paint Pig: Did you ever find any figures good for the Sicilian Normans? Caballarii in lamellar and scale?

One or two of the Crusader mini's have scale/ lamllar armour/s but it is spread throughout the whole armour and not just a 'vest'.

They look great.
I have a lot of Normans on my to do list for next year.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.
