That's right it's the Rogue Trader, Lion Rampant, Chain of Command mash up!
The combat mechanic, courage, activations and turn structure come from Lion Rampant; the patrol phase, jump off points, shock and leaders come from Chain of Command; and the figures, weapons, etc come from Rogue Trader. The result was two games played last night with one Ork victory and one to the Chaos Renegades. The first game saw the renegades send 40% of their force to deal with 3 Gretchin. The remaining renegades were toasted by four Ork squads and a truck. The finale came with the Renegade Leader deciding death in battle was superior to being roasted by his commander and went down fighting after single handedly charging an Ork squad.
This shows the moment in the second game an Ork squad with a heavy plasma gun (not shown) set a predator tank on fire with a long range shot into its side armour in revenge for it taking out their fellow flamer. The large hexagonal counters mark the jump off point and the tiddlywinks and dice used to track shock.
It was all in vain though as a Chaos Renegade multi-melta laid waste to an Ork heavy bolter squad and a prolonged fire fight saw the Ork Junior leader (pictured bottom centre) go down, rapidly followed by those two ork squads routing off the board. The loss of two jump off points and a truck pushed the Orks to 0 Army Morale.
Two games played and set up take down in less than 4 hours. Success! The rules worked pretty well. As leaders and Army Morale drop it becomes harder and harder to control your forces. The Chain of Command patrol phase and jump off points work like a charm. They let the action develop really quickly and allow for hidden troops without having the hassle of tracking blinds. The Lion Rampant shooting and armour mechanic gives power armour (at 3) a suitable advantage, adding 2 to armour for hard cover and 1 for soft cover encourages lurking in bushes and buildings. Basically if you are caught in the open you don't last long. I handled shock by calculating it just like casualties but with armour 1 less. Shock reduces movement, fire dice, makes it harder to activate and easier to become battered. It can only be removed by a Leader like in CoC
Lots to do to get the scenery finished. All those Mantic buildings need painting for a start. The Ork vehicle pool is also lacking in paint and the Chaos Marines could do with some medium strength support.
