best rules to play Zulu War
« on: December 15, 2008, 04:03:18 AM »
I am probably opening a can of worms  :D, but which rule set would you reccommend to play Zulu War? I have been reading about The Sword and the Flame rules, I also have Gaslight.

Years ago I used a rule set (the name escapes me now) which seemed to make the british rifle fire fairly ineffectual so they got chopped up by the zulus quite regularly. We had to adjust all the factors to give them more power and boost their hand to hand (particularly when behind barricades) factor to enable us to refight Rorkes Drift.

I am getting back into colonial after a long time away and will start with the Zulu War and then move to Afghan or Sudan wars.

Any suggestions?

Cheers
Neil
Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

Principles of War are my colonial rules of choice and have been for 15 years or so. Good rules, memorable games.

i asked the same question a couple of months ago and wanting to use 28mm in large skirmishes i was reccommended a large sellection of very good rules but ended up using the free ones from empress and adding/modifying as we played but the best large scale battle rules i agree with Principles of war

I've heard some good things about '800 fighting Englishmen' the battalion level version of TSATF from Larry Brom, but I am yet to try it. Not sure if anyone out there has done so and what they thought? We're starting to get to the point with our colonial games where we have too many units and figures on table to make for swift games, though still great fun.
